Media and Mental Health Abnormal Psychology is concerned with understanding the nature, causes, and treatment of mental disorders. It is a branch of psychology which studies the unusual patterns of behaviour, thought, emotions which may cause mental disorders. Abnormality is difficult to define, however, elements like suffering, maladaptiveness, dangerousness, violation of social norms, unpredictability can be helpful in considering if something is abnormal. The various types of mental disorders can be defined by using the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). People with mental disorders experience a great deal of stigma. Individuals, experience different situations which are influenced by their early childhood over which they do not have any control. The most common disorders that they have are anxiety disorders, Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, depression, Bipolar disorder, Eating disorders and schizophrenia. Recent researches have proved that a lot of mental disorders are being caused by the use of media by individuals and one such social media platform is Instagram. According to the recent survey conducted on 1,500 teens, Instagram was associated with causing high levels of anxiety, bullying, low self-esteem, depression and fear of missing out. The individuals living in a world full of technology do not leave the opportunity to connect with others through media and improve their impressions on them. But others who do not follow the footsteps of people who are active on media feel down, angry and sad. They start comparing themselves to others and fall into having disorders.
