Psychology is the study of the human mind and its function. Psychology is close to sociology and medicine. It uses scientific methods to figure out questions and solve problems. Psychology studies both normal and abnormal behavior. Psychologists deal with the norms of society. Their goal is to describe, explain, and predict behaviors of people. They want to describe human thought and behavior, explain why the behaviors occur, to predict if the behaviors will occur again, and to improve the behavior.

When a person is shown a word like green, but the color of the text is red, one part of the brain will be interpreting the written text. At the same time, another part of the brain will be processing the fact that the text is red in color. This conflicting information causes a delay in the time required by the brain to process the information. One part of the brain has to dominate, and at the same time deal with the response of other parts of the brain. This is called interference and normally the part of brain that handles reading abilities, will dominate. The right side automatically decodes letters and reads the word. The left side analyzes and decides on the color. When one is asked to read the color rather than the word the brain becomes conflicted. The data interpreted from the word slows down your response time making it rely on the anterior cingulate to choose the correct visual cue to base your answer on.
The Stroop effect deals with selective attention. It is easy to ignore some features of the environment, but not others. One explanation for the Stroop effect is that it reflects a difference in processing speed. That means that the reading of the word is faster than the naming of the color, so colors simply do not have the opportunity to mix with words. When something is practiced over and over again it tends to become automatic. It means that it requires little or no time to figure it
