Hollowness As A Way To Happiness
I once asked, “What is happiness?” I have received different answers from different people at different times. People define, understand or conceive happiness differently. Some people would say that a ‘means’ to happiness does not matter- the most important thing is the end or the result. It is logic that if one starts wrongly, certainly he will end up somewhere wrongly. How come then people say, “a means does not matter at all?” As to me, a means matters more than anything else. Once one is set wrongly, there is every possibility to encounter a number of deadlocks in every step and end up groping for nothing. I have seen it happening to many people. You might have seen it too in your way.

He has to drop it. Sometimes, we carry unnecessary stuffs either unconsciously or frightful. I once was very frightful diving into a shallow swimming pool. My friend was about to push me, but I ran away. It was just fear which prevented me from enjoying the freshness of the swimming pool. However, one day it happened that I gathered courage and dived into another swimming pool which is deeper than the former one. Nothing had happened, but I enjoyed the fruit of my courage. I learned diving and managed to risk my fear.
We often stuff the mind with things that ultimately suffocate it. We should instead blank it out from unnecessary contents. Emptying the mind needs tremendous courage. Hollowness is the path and happiness is the ultimate peak.
I strongly believe that happiness is already the case. We are happiness itself. Now, what is the point of pursuing something which is already the case? One day I remember that I lost my pen. I looked everywhere in my room, but I could not find it. “It is on your head trapped within the hairs; have you gone mad?” my friend said. Many times it happens to every one of us. We look things far away while they are within our reach. Hence, look within the reach; do not travel far away in the world. However, happiness also takes into account a wide range of other aspects of our lives, including our thoughts and actions, and even genetics. Therefore, happiness should be defined as the amalgamation of how we think and act, and how we interpret our experiences as positive or negative. What this means is that in order to become happier, we must simply force ourselves to become more optimistic. This is easier said than done, however. In order to have a noticeable increase in happiness, people must be willing to make lifestyle changes in addition to changing their mindset. Over this unit of American Literature we have studied The Great Gatsby the characters looked to others for their happiness. In Of Mice and Men The characters did what made others happy instead of themselves and also looked to simple things for happiness. Happiness is the positive emotion and contentment one feels naturally. Many Psychology studies have been concluded to display what pure happiness is. In the article, “In Pursuit of Unhappiness” by Darrin M. McMahon, he indicates that happiness cannot be forced. In the article, McMahon mentions a philosopher, John Stuart Mill, who acknowledges as well, that happiness can not be forced. He says that if one focuses on something other than their own happiness, happiness will come to them naturally. By what Mill says, people should be encouraged that happiness will come to them and can not force happiness to them. You see, happiness is not measurable, profitable, nor tradable. Yet, above all else in the world, it is what people seek.
Emptying out and allowing the mind to go with the flow is a practice that has been done for centuries. It is applicable in everyday life and with enough practice, anyone can do it. Emptiness is not an easy state to achieve, but with hours of dedication and a calm perseverance anyone can attain an empty, preconception-less mind. In Daodejing, it gives several examples of how we use emptiness on a daily basis. Whether we recognize that power on a daily basis is another point entirely. If someone is not already utilizing the power of emptying out, then they hopefully will see how strong a soft energy can be. Ultimately, emptiness is not restricted to only be a part of professional life, but can be used in friendly and romantic relationships too.
The pursuit of happiness ultimately leads to disappointment and a lack of satisfaction because people’s cravings can never be entirely fulfilled. Dalai Lama once said “When you are discontent, you always want more, more, more. Your desire can never be satisfied. But when you practice contentment, you can say to yourself, ‘Oh yes – I already have everything that I really need.’” This quote shows that having high expectations of anything leads to disappointment when the expectation is not met. The “empty mind” for example is an extremely common misunderstanding concept of the meditation. Just to be clear right now. You can not empty your mind. Never. Ever. There will always appear ideas and other contents to your mind, including straight thoughts, intentions, opinions, plans and will arrive more subtle phenomenons like feelings. Moreover, don’t forget that when you meditate, you are using your mind. Probably you don’t let yourself to think about the tasks what are waiting for you, but you are paying attention to your senses, to your breath, or in some meditations to your thoughts as well!
Happiness is something most humans value above everything else. The various things in life that make us happy, such as family, friends, and cool cars, to name a few, are the very things we hold dearest to us and place the most value on. People fill their lives with things that please them to ease the gloom that comes as a result of the seemingly never-ending trials and tribulations of life. We gladly accept any amount of pleasure we can extract from the monotony of our daily lives, and we will do almost anything to achieve happiness.
The Dalai Lama has said "Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions." It has been my experience that the most consistent, and reliable path to happiness is to show others kindness. When the world becomes too much to bear, and the trials of life seem insurmountable, an act of kindness can revitalize the spirit. To give kindness unconditionally is not only a way to bring light and joy into the life of someone else, it also brings light into the life of the giver. To have a heart full of kindness for others is impossible without first having an endless amount of kindness and forgiveness for yourself, because you cannot give something you do not have. People desire to be happy with what they have done in life. Some seem to focus mainly on trying to be happy. Going about this way, people are truly not making themselves happy. True happiness comes when people do not objectify happiness, but rather enjoy the journey. Happiness is not a goal but is a reward.
Happiness is an inner state of well-being and fulfilment, and therefore it has to come from inside. Every individual has his or her own emotions and way of thinking and as a result of this no one can really say what happiness is and what happiness is not. However, universally, happiness is a by-product of a healthy attitude and viewpoint. Happiness exists in everyone whether they choose to acknowledge and believe it or not. It is not rare nor is it something only the elite have: everyone has it but not everyone recognizes it. Contentment is finding a light at the end of every dark tunnel and in order to experience this we must ignore the pessimism surrounding us and remind ourselves that happiness is not a materialistic object but a choice and frame of mind.
Happiness is a feeling that humans naturally desire. Without it, one feels incomplete. In this generation, happiness has taken on a definition by how we are presented to one another. It is measured by how much money we have, how famous we are, or the things we possess. When in reality, none of these things guarantee a happy life. Happiness is something that cannot be bought with money, but rather, it must be found, earned, sought after. Each and every one of us has our own list of things that we consider to make us happy. However, happiness shines brightest through the relationships we create, and the goals we make for ourselves to strive after. Along with these two essential sources, we then can mix and match those things in life that we enjoy to create our own unique formula for happiness.
Throughout my life, I have learned to see that happiness is not such an inaccessible dream. Although its notion varies from one person to another, happiness is often times only one inch away. Some people will experience happiness in the pursuit of it. Some will find it in sacrificing themselves for greater goals. Others will find it in people’s company, in lust or in drugs. There is no recipe for success or happiness, and it is only up to us to define what we want from life, and how we want to get it. The only certain thing is that it is never too late for anybody to achieve their dreams, to make peace with their feelings, and ultimately, to be happy.
Happiness, what is it, and why do we strive to achieve it so persistently? Happiness in some points of view is portrayed as the state that is derived from self-awareness of a benefiting action or moment taking place. What of the moments that are not beneficial? Can a person still find moments of happiness and success in discord, a little glimmer of light shining from the deep recesses of our own consciousness? Plucking it from a mere moment, achieved from money, or is it so much more, happiness is the precipice that all strive to gain to better perceive their success. As a person lives, they are in a constant struggle to be happy. For instance, even the United States Constitution makes reference to the idea that every person has the inalienable right to pursue happiness. This was the resulting outcome of the enlightenment from France, spilling out into the rest of the world from 1650 through 1800. This revolutionized the idea that every single person has the inalienable right to happiness or in different views the right to succeed. As to how one peruses or conjures their happiness that is an entirely different concept and completely up to their preferred preference, but it is something that a person needs to find on their own for true success.
