Do your know which country should you go to during a vacation? Now, you might be thinking of Hawaii or someplace in Europe. For me, my answer is Cambodia. Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia. It is 181,035 km2 big and has a population of 15,458,332 people. Phnom Penh is its capital. Last summer, I went to Cambodia for volunteering. My trip to Cambodia soon became my most memorable trip. On August 9th, 2015, I arrived at the Phnom Penh International Airport as the sun rose up behind the storm cloud. The moment I stepped down from the airplane, I could feel the hotness in the air. Cambodia was as hot as hell. As we drove through Phnom Penh and into the countryside I suddenly had a strange feeling that something might go wrong during this …show more content…
I loved their enthusiastic voice but was surprised by their passion. We sat down and I could smell the food. Cambodians love to eat spicy food. Before I went to Cambodia I was concerned about the food, however, Cambodia food turned out to be awfully delicious. Their milkshake also tasted really sweet and fresh, I had to drink 3 cups of milkshake everyday. Life in Cambodia was really relaxing and fun. In Cambodia, we don’t have to worry about anything in Taiwan, regardless of schoolwork, job problems and our personal problems. I spent my time leisurely. We slept at 10 pm and were often woken up by the chickens in 6am. After breakfast, we would play games together and prepare for our afternoon course. Our group was responsible for teaching class C. They were the smallest kids in all of the classes. Before teaching, our leaders recommended us to act naturally with the kids and have fun with them. Although the kids were as agile as monkeys, our first class turned out to be really successful! We had decided to teach the kids a song for them to sing. And the kids seemed to be preforming
Haiti as a rich history, filled with many peoples’ blood and countless hopes of freedom. With such a rich history, the country has yet to become financially stable because of their past. From the beginning of the French settlement where slaves were brought over from Africa to harvest crops, to the dictatorship of the Duvalier family. Haiti has yet to see a time when they are not in need of help. After the racial caste systems were set in place, many people would not see a truly independent country. When France finally gave independence to Haiti, they did it for a price. After they paid that price, the US occupied them because of their location and many resources. Every year in Haiti’s history as a nation and before has effects on the world today. These effects are not hidden in fine print, but blatantly found within Haiti and those who have been involved with Haiti.
In 1975, the Khmer Rouge had taken over Cambodia becoming the ruling political party and had overthrown the Lon Nol government. They wanted Cambodia to form an anti-modern agrarian society. This novel is of political oppression set in Cambodia. First They Killed My Father is an emotional and heart wrenching memoir told by the perspective of a child, Loung Ung. It is an moving story told about a families survival with vivid detail and is more breathtaking and extreme as it is told from five year old Loung. As the horror begins Loung suffered through many journeys during her young ages; the deaths of her parents and siblings, being evacuated from Phnom Penh, her hometown, the knowledge she now has of the regime, and the loss of economic status. This family was brought together by trying to survive and some managed to stay strong and survive while others were not. Loung explains her experiences and how her family supported eachother but she managed to be the only one to survive in the end. Each family member learns from these life experiences especially Loung. Each family member adopts several techniques to survive throughout including sacrifice, separation and secrecy. The most important technique that had the most effect was all the sacrifices each family member made in order to stay strong and survive.
Tôi tự hào là việt. If you’re not of Vietnamese descent and even if you are familiar with the Vietnamese language, then you will most likely find trouble reading this, why? Because, this is a translation from Google. Nonetheless, it’s not the best interpretation available, but it roughly translates to “I am proud to be Vietnamese”. Despite me using Google translate--due to my lack of knowledge in writing in Vietnamese--which I am surely ashamed of, I hold that statement dear to my heart. As I continue to mature and progress in my life, my appreciation for my heritage is like a seed, everyday cultural experiences such as listening to Vietnamese music, eating wonderful Vietnamese cuisine, talking to my mother in Vietnamese, and reading about
Imagine a four year old girl growing up in contemporary Cambodia. Each morning she wakes up miles from home, homesick and scared. She is forced to beg for money for the brothel that she belongs to, and all of her earnings go straight to her master. Then, that night, about seven men come to the brothel. These men, some as old as fifty, often pay as little as two dollars to partake in sexual intercourse with these school-aged children. The toddlers enslaved in the horrific sex trade are forever stripped of their purity, making human trafficking a major issue in present day Cambodia. Over 30,000 children are sexually exploited annually (“Children for Sale”), and millions have been forced into human trafficking in the past ten years. Additionally, multiple calculations by human trafficking specialists show that, “at least ten times as many girls are now trafficked into brothels annually as African slaves were transported to the New World in the peak years of the trans-Atlantic slave trade” (Kristof), putting the issue as a high priority to abolish. Moreover, with such a large number of prostituted girls in Cambodia, the birth rate has skyrocketed in the years after the Cambodian genocide, when the sex-trade developed due to cultural differences and ethnic diversity in the country. A corrupt communist government, the Khmer Rouge, executed over thirty percent of the population of Cambodia in just four years. However, the ethnic conflict has led to more brothels, causing a larger population. This large birth rate has created overpopulated cities and poor sanitation. Furthermore, education is an issue due to the lack of responsible teachers and classroom availability, and many girls are rejected by their fa...
Cambodia is a country home to one of the most atrocious acts that have ever occurred in the world. People today may view Cambodia as a magnificent country but concealed behind the vibrant scenery is a dark past so appalling it is having effects on the country even decades after it originally occurred. Cambodia was plagued by an act of genocide at the hands of the Khmer Rouge so horrendous that it nearly decimated the entire populace of Cambodia. During the 1960’s and much ...
Before starting this class I had very little information about Cambodia, but after we started reading In a Rocket Made of Ice and going over the history and culture of Cambodia I learn a lot. Three Major things I learned about Cambodia are that Cambodia is a full of hardship ranging from human trafficking to a bloody genocide, but I also learned that Cambodia is a place full of people who are very kind and religious. Cambodia has very bad human trafficking problem, which causes a lot of the people in Cambodia to be sold into slavery. Cambodia is trying to combat the issue, but with lack of infrastructure its very are to fight. United States has recently seen an increase in human trafficking has well, but the United States has a very strong
Watching from Afar: A mother and daughter have a special and unique bond, but what if the mother was never in the picture? In the short story called “The Embassy of Cambodia” by Zadie Smith, the main character named Fatou never mentions her mother in the whole story, but she mentions her father very briefly. The narrator is never truly mentioned, but many reasons have the audience believing it is her mother that is the narrator. Even though Fatou strives to be independent, she always has her mother following her when she doesn’t even know it. Her mother is the narrator because she was chosen by the Embassy, knows Fatou’s thoughts, and knows the type of pain Fatou is going through and has gone through.
The Kingdom of Cambodia, situated in the Indochinese peninsula above the Gulf of Thailand, is an ancient nation with a rich and unique history. In Khmer, its official language, the country’s name is Preăh Réachéanachâk Kâmpŭchéa, though it is usually referred to as Kâmpŭchéa. Throughout its checkered past, Cambodia has been influenced by many external forces, the most prominent of these being India, China, and France. Being a part of a peninsula known for facilitating multi-cultural diffusion has allowed the nation to develop a distinctive culture. Though Cambodia has not always thrived, it has certainly stabilized and developed much since the late 20th century. Its booming textile and tourism industries are unmistakable signs of its progress.
Cambodia isn’t really thought of when people are asked to think of a foreign country, they usually think of China or India. Cambodia is a southeastern country located between Vietnam and Thailand. Imperialism, capitalism and wars have really changed Cambodia, from the government, to the civilians.
The global health challenge that I am focusing on is malnutrition in Cambodia. Malnutrition is the result of poor feeding practices such as wasting and stunting during early childhood. In Cambodia up to 40% of the children are malnourished because of poverty, this is an alarming fact and something needs to be done to prevent this (World Vision International, 2014). This health problem is essential to a couple of the UN Millennium Development Goals which are eradicate extreme hunger and poverty and reduce child mortality. Cambodia unfortunately, has the highest infant and under-five child mortality rate in the region, at 97 and 141 per 1,000 live births, with malnutrition being one of them (Unicef, 2003). Poverty as well, is really high in this country and many people are only surviving on less than one dollar a day. Therefore, it is important that we address this problem by focusing on creating better access to food and providing nutritious food at a lower price, having schools educate on a well-balanced healthy diet, and enhancing breastfeeding, sanitation and hygiene practices.
Singapore gained its independence in 1965.It has been growing gradually and increasingly in the economy. I is now included among the world’s most competitive economies. This was made possible by being an public business globally, with a good business environment and a substantial political market, making it a popular country to invest in globally.
The genocide in Cambodia was a result of the Khmer rouge guerrilla force that seized power over the Lon Nol government in 1975. Their leader, Pol Pot, was an admirer of Chinese communism and wanted to make Cambodia a place in which all citizens were to participate in agricultural activities and all western innovations were to be removed. Pol Pot then proposed that to create the ideal communist nation, all Cambodians must all work as labourers on collective farms, and anyone who opposed this was to be eliminated. However during this time Cambodia was involved in the Vietnam War due to the fact that the old government leader, Lon Nol, was helping the U.S.A backed South Vietnam forces to conquer North Vietnam, backed by Pol Pots’ forces. Before Pol Pots took over the Cambodian government, the Americans, already fighting in Vietnam, thought that it was ok to also invade the capitalistic Cambodia. During this time the guerrilla forces ruled by Pol Pots, were fighting a civil war against Lon Nol, who was allowing the Americans to harbour troops, airbases, barracks and weapon caches. When Pol Pots’ forces won the civil war, he started supporting the North Vietnamese army. Thus Pol Pots showed his true anger towards the capitalistic countries and passion for communism.

My family is not the type of family to go on many vacations but if there is a place where we have an opportunity to visit it would be Bangladesh. The country that made my family who they are now.
