On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was attempted to be arrested for evading the state tax law on selling cigarettes. This was not the first time he was arrested for selling cigarettes for an illegal price. The officers tried to detain Garner, but he resisted against the officers. In the heat of the moment, the officers were startled by Garner’s size and tried to take him down by grabbing ahold of his neck to lower him to the ground. According to the New York Times, Garner pleaded 11 times “I can't breathe” until they choked him to death (1). The white police officer, Daniel Pantaleo, was found to be the one that had killed him. It is believed like this because you can never assume the reason for the murder. For example, many cases of murder occur in a self-defense situation, as the Los Angeles Times reports that from 2007-2012, there were about 259 gun related attacks/murders, which were all justifiable with self-defense. (6) In these cases, the “murderer” had a reason to kill someone, because they feared for their own life. Another case would be the mental stability of the “murderer”. Social workers from the University of Pennsylvania have done studies and came with the conclusions that about 10% of all murders are caused by someone with a mental illness, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. (7) In this case, the attacker has no control over their mind, and in essence, their body. However, those people should be treated for their illness if it puts the lives of other people in danger. A human life is very precious, and depending on your views on afterlife, you want to live it to the greatest and it's full potential. To take a human life away is so morally wrong and carries a weight with you for your entire life. In New Jersey, the law for first degree murder, or homicide, is 30+ years or life in jail, showing that murder is very serious. (4) Also, the family of the homicide victim needs justice somehow. Losing a family member is always horrible, but losing them to someone’s horrible intentions is a thousand times worse. The family is going to want the attacker to receive the correct punishment for the death of their loved one. It's terrible for someone to kill another person, and walk away punishment free.
