Chiraq to Honor Black Restaurants
Chicago may have a severe conflict between black men and the police, but the city has a love for black restaurants. The Windy City just finished its annual Restaurant Week celebration. In recognition of Black History Month, however, publicist Lauren Smith decided that it would be wise to extend the celebration for another seven days in honor of "Chicago Black Restaurant Week".
Smith spoke with WBEZ, "I chose the week because before there was Black History Month, way back in 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week, which was always the second week in February. So I said let me honor his initial vision to honor African-Americans who have played a part in our history. And let me do the restaurant
... the future of black business in America. Just from reading this book and seeing the future of business and the commodification of black culture since its first publishing, most of the areas that the book touches upon have given accurate insight to how others have cashed in on black culture and how black business has evolved. An example that is evident is of George Foreman and his promotion of the Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. Here is a black heavyweight boxer that is using not only his name and his former athletic prowess to endorse a product, but, one can say, also stereotypical blackness, with his affinity to unhealthy foods such as hamburgers and hot dogs, to promote a promote a product for Salton, Inc., a Jewish-founded company. Foreman, like Jordan, amassed a large fortune from his promotion of the grills but at the price of selling black culture.
For in an extraordinary career spanning three crucial decades, the man and the history became one, so much so that it is impossible to deal with the history of black people without touching, at some point, the personal history of Carter Woodson, who taught the teachers, transformed the vision of the masses and became, almost despite himself, an institution, a cause and a month. One could go further and say that the scientific study of black history began with Woodson, who almost single-handedly created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and the prestigious Journal of Negro History. Not content with these achievements, he ventured into the field of mass education, creating the annual black history celebrations.
Analysis of Why are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria by Beverly Daniel Tatum
Bissondath demonstrates The association of Black nurses, The association of Black Artists and The Association of Black Jurists as examples of socially acceptable segregated groups that if presented only to white people the aforementioned would create discomfort. According to Ontario Black History Society Why a Black History Month socially segregated groups and events like Black History Month help groups feel celebrated and equal as she says “when the contributions of people of African descent are acknowledged” and “treated with equality, there will be no need for Black History month.”
I believe that every company should encourage a relationship of trust, loyalty, honesty, and responsibility among staff members at all levels. It’s important that each staff member works together to achieve excellence in a business, so the code of conduct is put in place. The purpose of the code is to provide guidance and set common ethical standards for employees from the top of the food chain to the bottom of the food chain. Some of the areas that I find to be significant of importance in a business are sexual harassment, discrimination and simply being professional in a work environment.
The city of Chicago was nicknamed “The Black City,” (P.11) before they had hosted the 1893 fair that had brought the city into life. Chicago was a city that was ridden with much crime and death to the point where young women could have been tempted to fall under the dangers of this city. Death was more commonplace then Chicago then other cities at that time because of murders that were so frequent in this city. The author does point out that “You can step from a curb and be killed by the Chicago Limited” (P.12). That fact even struck fear into the people who were visiting Chicago just to have fun or eve...
The book asks two questions; first, why the changes that have taken place on the sidewalk over the past 40 years have occurred? Focusing on the concentration of poverty in some areas, people movement from one place to the other and how the people working/or living on Sixth Avenue come from such neighborhoods. Second, How the sidewalk life works today? By looking at the mainly poor black men, who work as book and magazine vendors, and/or live on the sidewalk of an upper-middle-class neighborhood. The book follows the lives of several men who work as book and magazine vendors in Greenwich Village during the 1990s, where mos...
If it were not for them, the children in today's society would still be faced with segregation. They need to have an understanding of what our ancestors and important African Americans had to go through to get us where we are today. We should celebrate Black History Month because it represents African Americans as a whole. By celebrating this month, it shows that we fought for our rights and never gave up. It shows that we went through many obstacles and being turned down by the whites did not stop the movement.
The Black History Month is a time when the children are taught about the inventions that were mostly done by the black pioneers. During this month, the children are taught on the most basic information regarding he black pioneers but the background information is not taught. Due to the shallowness of the lessons in this month, those taught concerning it carry very little significance of an individual such as Charles Drew having invented the blood plasma. This period is celebrated in the month of February and has been controversial for some time. Most individuals especially from the Black Americans argue that this month should not be celebrated. Award winning actor by the name of Morgan Freeman refers to the Black History Month as ‘ridiculous’. Bearing in mind the facts concerning the Black History Month, it should not be celebrated.
“Brownies” by ZZ Packers is a story told in first person, and it happens at Camp Crescendo. It is a story narrated by an African America girl by the name Laurel, nicknamed by other girls as Snot. She belongs to the Brownie Troop, and they are planning to rock horns with the Brownie Troop 909. It is good to note that Laurel’s troop is made up of black girls while Brown Troop 909 is made of all white girls. The two troops are rivals owed to their race. They hated one another from the time they first met, and the black girls said the white girls smelled “like Chihuahuas, Wet Chihuahuas” (Packer, 9). Throughout their stay in the camp, they engage in nasty things against each other owed to their hatred. In the story, people of different backgrounds
Negro Achievement week was placed in February in order to commemorate the birthdays of two men who helped pave the way for African Americans: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Both of these men’s birthdays were already being celebrated in black communities, thus increasing the possibility of success for Negro Achievement Week. But Woodson didn’t want this celebration to just be about these two men; however great, neither one of them single-handedly abolished slavery. Rather, Woodson wanted Negro Achievement to celebrate and appreciate the great accomplishments and history of the whole entire African race. Woodson’s Negro Achievement Week received a lo...
...e time television depicts Black Americans as people who do not know how to speak proper English, live in the projects and ghettos, and procreate beyond our existence so that all we can do is rob the system and depend on welfare for our sustenance. These depictions are very stereotypical and negative. Martin R. Delany, a renowned Black American who wrote a book that discussed the attributes of a black man said that Black Americans should foster a sense of pride because of our complex and unique history. We need to bind together and “Lift up Every Voice” (Black national hymn) to make sure our past and future histories are not forgotten, not just by us but by every American. The legacy of Black History Month is an achievement we all should be proud of, but for Peace’s Sake do not let others undermine your past and accomplishments and do not forget your own history.
The term “fast-food” is usually distinguished by food served very quickly to a customer by drive-through or carry-out. Fast-food restaurants are highly associated with low-cost and malnutrition foods with brief consumer and employee interaction, and below average cleanliness based on restaurant health inspection reports. Chick-fil-A has changed the usual perception of fast-food restaurants. Rather than burgers and potato fries, Chick-fil-A serves chicken sandwiches and waffle fries. Chick-fil-A also shows their appreciation for employee to customer relations, rather than ignoring the social aspect of serving customers when operating at a fast pace. Chick-fil-A’s menu selection, customer interaction, and clean eating
People are motivated by the hope of a better life. Sources 16, 14, and 13 show this. People are motivated by the hope of a better life as seen in the era of slavery and gaining the rights they are entitled to.
I spent the next twenty minutes, at least, getting to know more about the Town Kitchen through its Chief Operations Officer, Tara Mutukisna. I had had a boxed lunch of theirs at an event last month about racial segregation in the restaurant industry. I learned that Town Kitchen keeps their food from spoiling between being cooked and reaching the customer-- who is often a corporate worker, since Town Kitchen currently depends on scale for efficiency-- by planning and executing careful refrigeration and immediate, efficient trips. I learned that the program coordinator there is a social worker with a background in counseling, whic...
