Sentences provide structure, ideas and context that are foundations of good essays, cultural context and purpose varies depending on the presenter and their values. In this essay, I have chosen two sentences regarding ongoing concern of perceived perfect body image, impact on individuals and influential factors will be rhetorically analysed based on their cultural contexts and target audience.

Comparisons will be made between two sentences; Speech by Lynne Featherstone, delivered and published on 29th February 2012 on body image and other extracted from article in “The Guardian” regarding evidence of dark side of modelling addressing brutal realities of unrealistic expectations of physical appearance in order to survive in the modelling industry.

Both sentences appeal to Pathos, Ethos and Logos of the presenter, as they engage the audience thus building rapport with the reader with a range of rhetorical devices which will be explored later on in this essay.

Evidence from Primary sources “Interchangeable coat hangers” –Buchwald quote; provided insights of the industry through personal anecdotal reference. These rhetorical devices appeal to combination of logos, ethos and pathos respectively, which also builds rapport due to emotional connection through sympathy with intended audiences (reader of “the guardian”).

On the other hand the context of modelling agency ‘Wilhelmina models’ suggests otherwise; promoting the look of stick thin models on the runway. Models are referred to as “interchangeable coat hangers”, objectifying and disregarding the models as humans with rights. The dismissive tone is degrading and the description intends to do so aswell, thus reflecting the brutal industry.
