At one point Ellen DeGeneres got kicked off of a talk show, but it wasn’t for her performance, it was because she came out as lesbian and the talk show did not accept that. But instead of giving up, Ellen decided to take her career in her own hands by doing that she raised to fame years later. But how did she come from being at rock bottom to an inspiration to so many? It was a journey but in order to inspire, Ellen persuaded the audience to stay true to themselves by using pathos and ethos.
In her commencement speech, Ellen DeGeneres uses the technique
pathos to get the audience engaged, inspire them, and to give them the ability
to relate. For example, at the beginning of her speech she states, “When I was
your age, I was dating men.” This

statement made the audience laugh because Ellen has now come out as lesbian and is very open about it.
She follows with a
challenge that she faced when coming out, sharing how her budding career as a
talk show speaker/host was gone after she came out because people were ashamed
to be associated with her and nobody wanted to hire her for three years. But,
during this time of despair for Ellen, she received letters from kids who had
almost committed suicide but did not because they didn’t feel as alone knowing
Ellen, a big celebrity, came out. Ellen then goes on telling the audience
“Really when I look back on it, I wouldn’t change a thing. I mean, it was so
important for me to lose everything because I found out what the most important
thing is, is to be true to yourself. Ultimately, that’s what has gotten me to
this place.” This quote from Ellen’s’ speech not only allows the audience to
relate to Ellen, but also inspires them to stay true to themselves through
sharing a story about a very personal and challenging time in her life. These
quotes from Ellen’s’ commencement speech show the use of pathos in different
ways, making the audience laugh and feel emotional, she was able to gain trust
from the audience and also inspire them.
What made her speech so successful was by her using pathos.

But, the way she accomplished that was with her word choice. Some of the words Ellen used were creepy, killed, and gone. These may seem like just some words that people use all the time, that’s because they are. But in the serious context of Ellen’s’ speech they instill certain emotions or have a connotation that will change how certain people will receive the message.
The three words I chose as
examples all instill different emotions, creepy instills feeling scared, killed
instills feeling sad or feel lost, and gone instills feeling empty. Those three
words, show how Ellen brings the people she speaks to on an emotional
rollercoaster in a short period of time, and the way she does this is using
words that correlate to emotions, otherwise known as pathos.
In her speech addressing the 2009 graduating “Katrina Class” at
Tulane University, Ellen uses ethos to make the audience feel hopeful and
inspired. What makes ethos so prevalent in Ellen’s’ speech is that she is now a
well-known talk show host and has inspired many in the journey of her
challenging yet rewarding life in which she shares.
Ellen tells stories and jokes to get the audience to trust her and
feel as though they are friends with her. One of the stories that stands out
and builds the trust wall with her audience is when Ellen shares her story
about her coming out experience, which I partially mentioned earlier. This
story also relates to ethos because it shows that even though she is a big
celebrity, she is still human and has had rough moments too. But, in order
for Ellen to get the audience to listen to her, she has to get their attention, and the way she does that is unique, but very effective and that is by telling a joke. She starts off her speech by saying “I realize most of you are hungover and have splitting headaches and haven’t slept since fat Tuesday, but you can’t graduate ‘til I finish, so listen up.” This not only grabs the audience’s attention by saying “I know you are hungover”, which is not something people typically say to a big group, but it also directly states what the audience has to do. Ellen DeGeneres went through many high and many lows in her life but has overcame them, such as getting shunned from all media and job offers for 3 years because she came out as lesbian publicly. How she regained fame, got her own talk show, and inspired many people was by using the techniques of ethos and pathos. Overall, the use of rhetorical techniques is a powerful tool for influencing others because they impact or play with your emotions by their connotation and meaning.
Ulrich had a well explanation for her slogan on "well-behaved women." She supports her slogan by bringing up certain women stereotypes that have been going on throughout history. She uses these stereotypes to explain how certain people view on women.
Are humans cold-blooded killers? Biologist Rachel Carson states we “resort to ‘eradicating’ any creature that may annoy or inconvenience us.” However, her book is made much more than a provocative statement through her thoughtful reasoning and factual evidence. She focuses her argument against the use of deadly poisons, like parathion, which she says are “universal killers,” crying moral injustice throughout.
In her ,“Harvard”, address, actress, comedian and producer Amy Poehler speaks to the graduating class of 2011. Her speech is filled with her uplifting sense of humor and her down-to-earth personality that you can’t help but enjoy. Poehler utilizes various rhetorical strategies throughout her address such as allusion, and conveying pathos in a humourous as well as an emotional way. By using these, she successfully encourages the young students and families at Harvard University to work their hardest and take on the world.
she gets flashbacks of the past incidents that occurred all because of her uncle. This story overall,
It amazes me how a few decades ago can seem like a whole different world. A course of time can impact our lives more than we know it. In the article, A Day Without Feminism by Jennifer Boumgoidnei and Amy Richntds, both of these authors created this piece to inform their audience that although women have gained more rights over time, there was still more progress to be made. These authors gave many examples of how life for women had been, the obstacles they had to overcome, and the laws women had to break for equality.
Unions have always been a pain in employers’ sides. From today to the 1910s, workers have tried to unionize for better conditions in their jobs. Today, people try to opt out of being in unions, avoiding the union’s dues but still reaping the rewards. That’s a long way away from what people experienced in the 1910s. During that time period, people were struggling to even be apart of a union. Some people would even risk their jobs to do it. In fact, the first worker’s strike was was during the the West Virginia Coal Wars. Coal Miners went on strike to advocate for better working conditions and better pay. At the helm was Mary Harris Jones, or Mother Jones as she was known. She fought for coal miner workers’ rights and helped them unionize by
Overall, Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a convincing speech on women’s rights at the U.N. World Conference by using the key rhetorical techniques ethos, pathos, logos, and anaphora’s. The use of these techniques helped the audience believe in the cause of which Clinton was speaking about, sympathize for situations females were being put through, and working to strive towards equal rights for everyone. Clinton used the same stance throughout her speech and raised her voice at points in her speech that needed
Oprah Winfrey achieved great success in her various endeavors, growing from a news reporter in Nashville to the world-famous talk show host she is today. During the 1980s, talk shows were a crucial part of daytime television. Shows were organized based upon their content and varied greatly in subject. The popularity of talk shows led many people to enter this field, leading to a constant struggle for airtime. Oprah’s rise to fame began when she moved from her hometown in Nashville, to college in Baltimore and ultimately to Chicago, where she lives today. She appeared on an early morning television program called A.M. Chicago, which was later retitled The Oprah Winfrey Show which aired its first episode on September 8, 1986. Talk shows like Oprah’s were wildly popular, especially to women, because they focused on entertaining their viewers rather than discussing political problems. The thirty-minute to hour-long programs allowed for people to escape their problems, even if only for a short period of time (Rose). Biographer, Ilene Cooper took on the challenge of writing a biography about the complex and extraordinary life of Oprah Winfrey. In an article on the Kirkus Review website, published in 2010, a critic enjoys how the author of the biography, Up close: Oprah Winfrey, “makes excellent use of many quotes from interviews, Oprah’s own writing and, of course, her television show” (“Oprah Winfrey”). This reviewer appreciates how the biographer uses all of her resources to understand more information about Oprah. Some of Oprah’s greatest contributions to society are her generous donations to several organizations, and the way she encourages individuals to take actions that can not on...
Winfrey’s early life was filled with arduous hurdles from the beginning, she was raised in a small podunk town in Mississippi that was anything but safe for a young girl, but on top of that she was raised by a single mother who was not around nearly enough. However the most formidable part of her upbringing was, she was sexually abused by ‘family friends’ and relatives on multiple occasions starting from the age of just nine. At twelve she was sent away to middle Tennessee to live with her father, there she realised her passion, she began giving speeches in front of her church and ultimately came to the conclusion that she wanted to speak for a living. Without her parents divorce Winfrey might have never figured out her passion of speaking to people until it was too late, this was a hidden advantage in the making of her success. However all too soon she had to leave the comfort of her father’s home where she could pursue her interest and journey back to her mother, where she was sadly yet again

Smiling, hopefulness, and confidence are all qualities that an optimist is composed of. Along with theses qualities they believe in the silver linings such as, tomorrow is a new day and that good things are going to happen. The previous statements define the a woman that is truly selfless and has not let all the fame go to her head, Ellen DeGeneres. When people think of Ellen the first word that may come to mind is “comedian.” Yet, she is so much more than that. Ellen has thousand of amazing qualities for one to admire, but her selflessness is truly the most remarkable. Ellen inspires people everyday with her kindness, humbleness, and her leadership abilities.
On November 8th 2016, many Americans lives were turned upside down when they began to realize they had to accept the reality that Donald Trump is the President of the United States of America. Although Clinton won the popular vote with 53% of women and 41% of males voting for her Trump managed to win the electoral votes (fortune). The following day, Hillary Clinton delivered her concession speech. She sent her condolences to her supporters by expressing gratitude and thanking them for sticking by her side. Throughout the speech, Clinton excluded and marginalized certain social groups including the Republicans and men.
Oprah overcame her abused adolescent years. As a hero the main achievement is to overcome the demons of darkness. Her natural talent would be created. As a child she excelled in reading and writing, she loved acting and speaking to her stuffed animals. This carried on into her adult life, now she just speaks to people instead of her dolls. Oprah’s period of self-doubt was when she was abused and started acting up due to those actions. She overcame the lure of the Great Mother and overcame the father in one swoop when she moved out of the dangerous neighborhood tempted her to do wrong and the rules under her mother. I would consider her first period of reflection was when she moved in with her father and she was reassured she is
Ellen didn't let this stop her though, she persevered. Like her character Dory in finding Nemo said, “Just keep swimming”, which is exactly what she did. She became a popular role model and encouragement for many people in the LGBT group and helped the world better open up to these people. Ellen has also been a part of over 50 charities and causes. She has helped charities like, Clothes off Our Back, Stand Up To Cancer, Straight But Not Narrow, Soles4Souls, and many others.
Oprah Winfrey had an arduous life growing up. She lived alone with her single mother, who was perpetually working aspiring to provide for her kids, for a number of years and
