A Relationship With My Teacher

The story starts eighteen years ago in the small town of Clinton, Maine. In a two story, brown, ranch style house, two new parents and their daughter start their lives as a family. The parents want nothing but the best for their daughter, they wanted her to be happy, healthy, and educated. The daughter in this is me, Alyssa Higbie. I loved where I lived, for the most part at least. I loved the small town feel, nothing was too cramped. I always had space to roam and quite place to think. I knew practically everyone when I was growing up. The small town feel also made its way into the classroom, for all my years in elementary school I do not remember ever having a class that had more than 15 students. Because of this I was able to have more of a one on one relationship with my teachers. I believe that this interaction as a young student really helped me to have a connection and passion for learning. I would consider myself fairly lucky for my life situation. While I did have a few risk factors such as being in a low income family and having a disability, these did not hold me back. For my entire childhood my parents did not work, we lived off of my mother’s disability checks, and savings in the bank. My parents did a remarkable job of making sure that I did not know much about our financial situation when I was growing up, so I never worried about it. All I knew was that I had a roof over my head, clean clothes, food on the table, and what ever I needed cared for. As far as my disability goes, I have been Type 1 diabetic since age 2 and a half. With being diagnosed so young, I do not remember a time when I was not diabetic. While some people may think of this as a ‘bad’ thing, I find it to have actually helped me in the long run.... ... middle of paper ... ...f I am having a particularly emotional day, especially in times where thoughts and feelings of my mother arise, then it is sometimes difficult to get back on track. For me to learn and process information the best, I need clear information given to me in a written form ideally, as well as talking out what is going on. Between the written and oral description of something I am better able to understand the information or task. I am also very much am a combination of a couple different learning styles, as most students are. If I am able to see, hear, and somehow touch the material then it is going to have the maximum absorption into my memory. As far as hindering my learning goes, if lessons are in lecture form information normally seems to slip through my memory. I need to be able to make a number of connections to be able to remember information for the long term.
