Dear Students of York High School, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream is a comedic play that is suitable for people of all ages. This play is about the adventures and experiences of a set of two young lovers hiding away in a mystical forest, a fairy kingdom with a fairy King and Queen, and a group of commoners and actors who want to perform “Pyramus and Thisby” for the wedding of the Duke of Athens. Hermia is deeply in love with Lysander but, because of the social expectation of arranged marriage at that time, Hermia’s father wants her to marry Demetrius. It includes pranks and tricks, witty banter, clever dialogue, multiple plots, deception and disguise and so forth. It has a light, humorous tone. For example, during rehearsal, a common weaver of the town who is one of the main characters in the play comes in contact with magic by Puck and his head is transformed into a donkey’s head or an “ass”; which makes him the butt of the play’s biggest joke. Puck declares that his friends have run away from him in fear because they're trying to "make an ass" out of him (III.i.16, Shakespeare, William; ebook). Whether your class is reading or acting out this book, it is pretty hysterical to read. Maybe not “Laugh-out-Loud” funny but “Ha-ha” type of funny. The plot is so twisted that it is very enjoyable and entertaining to read for all ages. This play will be very fun to read, although the Shakespearian language is a bit challenging and sometimes hard to follow, however, this play is a great example of one of Shakespeare’s classics and can help students explore important themes while enjoying this play. This play connects with students and may help them have a better understanding of Shakespeare and the timeless messages he conveyed through his brilliant
