Romance has come a long way in the last few hundred years. Many things have changed but yet, some things have stayed the same. During the medieval times romance was also known as chivalry, a code of conduct for Knight’s. Today most people would claim that chivalry is dead. In a lot of ways romance has stayed the same since the medieval time period. The two movies “A Knight’s Tale” and “50 First Dates” showed many similar romantic elements such as quests and female figures between the two eras. A quest is an expedition to accomplish a goal. In “A Knight’s Tale”, peasant William Thatcher has a goal to change his status and become a knight. His father sent him away with a knight when William was a young boy. On his quest to become a knight, Sir William meets Lady Jocelyn, a fair maiden that has also caught the attention of count Adhemar. Sir William and Count Adhemar were to joust and have Lady Jocelyn as the prize for the winner, but the joust kept getting postponed. The longer it was postponed the more Sir William loved Lady Jocelyn. Sir William was still going by his Alias and that is what Lady Jocelyn thought he was. As a test of his love for she tells him to forfeit his most important jousting tournament. At first he refuses but ends up doing it anyways just to prove his love. Eventually everybody finds out that Sir Ulrich is really a Sir William and not a knight but a peasant. Lady Jocelyn loves him anyways. Henry’s quest on the other hand went a little differently. Lucy had short term memory loss and never remembered who he was. In an effort to get her to remember he met her every morning and went on “50 first dates”. During all these dates Henry began to fall in love with Lucy, something he was afraid of. Lucy’s father wanted him gone. His way of protecting Lucy was by pretending every day is the same day, the last day that she remembers. Henry pointed out to him that, “Someday she's gonna wake up and look in the mirror and notice her face's aged ten years overnight”(Segal). Henry persisted to prove himself to her and her father.
