One of my greatest hobbies is travelling the globe and I love to see new places. I enjoy experiencing new environment and culture. There are many countries to visit around the world and each country has something unique to offer. In every country, there are many beautiful places to see and tradition to learn. However, the country I have always wanted to visit is Italy. Italy is located in Europe and it is famous for its ancient history, architectural heritage, culture and even food. It is my dream to visit Italy with my family one day. There are many reasons why I would like to visit Italy. First of all, I am really interested in Italy’s ancient history and architectural heritage. Rome, the capital city of Italy is one of the most significant cities in history ruled by the famous Roman kings such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Vespasian and many more. I have heard and learnt the history of the Roman Empire since I was young and it made me want to visit Italy. I have also watched many Roman historic movies and it motivated my desire to visit the...

Over the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively around the United States and Canada with my family so traveling abroad to Italy seemed like a natural adventure. I anticipated that my journey to Italy to be very similar to my previous experiences, with the addition of seeing some of the most beautiful landmarks and paintings in the world. When I arrived, I discovered an entirely different culture and attitude towards Americans. Conversation was difficult and I felt out-of-place. Italians were able to tell me apart even before I said a word. Anti-American graffiti were written on the stone walls of Rome which made me feel very unwelcomed.
Like stated above, I am from Green Bay and go to school in De Pere, therefore, I am very familiar with the area. Since I grew up in this area, I know a lot of people I can talk to if I need help or a lot of places I can go. Going to Italy, I will no longer have that comfort and will no longer be able to rely on those people or places. I plan on overcoming this challenge by educating myself with the Italian culture before I arrive. Some strategies I will do include: reading articles on google or a book from the library, and asking my friend questions about the area and culture. I want to learn as much information I can before being able to experience it first-hand. I am also interested in reaching out to my classmates that are studying abroad with me; this way I know a familiar face and we can talk about our concerns, opinions, and interest together. By doing these things, I know I will be ready to be out of my comfort

Rome is a magical place that has interesting affects on the many people that go there. A prime example of this is Stendhal and Goethe, who both went to Rome around the same time. Goethe was there near the end of the 18th century and Stendhal was there around the beginning of the 19th century. The two of them experienced some of the same things while there, but mainly their visits contrasted vastly. This may have been because they chose to experience different things or for unknown other reasons. Whatever the reasons may have been for causing the experiences that they had, they definitely both had experiences that changed how they looked at Rome and that affected their lives forever.
We see Rome as a city full of beauty and history everywhere you look, but you can appreciate the scenery and the city so much more if you know the history of Rome. Some of the key factors that made Rome what it is today are the people who founded it, the army, the slaves, the roads, how it was governed, the education, and the religion.
