A Comparison of Blue Remembered Hills by Denis Potter and Hope and Glory produced by John Boorman There are many significant similarities and differences between the two extracts I have studied. A common similarity being the era they are set in; during the Second World War. Although the two pieces of drama are set in the same time period, they offer a great contrast in terms of their setting. Blue Remember Hills, set in 1943, is a naturalistic play situated in the countryside. Whereas Hope and Glory very much displays the effects of war in towns and cities, particularly the suburbs of London. In addition Blue Remember Hills follows the life of a gang of children who are played by adult actors where as Hope and Glory used child actors. In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
There are many ways in which we can view the history of the American West. One view is the popular story of Cowboys and Indians. It is a grand story filled with adventure, excitement and gold. Another perspective is one of the Native Plains Indians and the rich histories that spanned thousands of years before white discovery and settlement. Elliot West’s book, Contested Plains: Indians, Goldseekers and the Rush to Colorado, offers a view into both of these worlds. West shows how the histories of both nations intertwine, relate and clash all while dealing with complex geological and environmental challenges. West argues that an understanding of the settling of the Great Plains must come from a deeper understanding, a more thorough knowledge of what came before the white settlers; “I came to believe that the dramatic, amusing, appalling, wondrous, despicable and heroic years of the mid-nineteenth century have to be seen to some degree in the context of the 120 centuries before them” .

The short story Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is written in first person through the narrator. This story focuses on the narrator’s brother sonny and their relationship throughout the years. This story is taken place in Harlem, New York in the 1950s. The narrator is a high school algebra teacher and just discovered his brother in the newspaper. This story includes the traditional elements to every story, which consist of the exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution.
The reclusive film director Terrence Malick has to date, only directed a small number of films. His twenty year hiatus between directing Days of Heaven (1978) and The Thin Red Line (1998), may provide the explanation for such a sparse back catalogue. Malick’s refusal to talk with the media, has led to hearsay, as to how he occupied his time during the hiatus. Malick’s directing debut Badlands (1973) is a collection of concepts, all carefully moulded together to create one iconic piece of film. This process draws in and also alienates the audience. Malick’s style is positively noted by critics to be influenced by European philosophy. This is clearly due to Malick’s study of philosophy at Harvard and Magdalen College Oxford. There is no given explanation to the mindless violence featured within the film, mainly due to the films resistance to the straight forward approach. The familiar and the unknown are carefully merged together. The only way of gaining an understanding into the hidden meanings within Badlands is by breaking down the film, by looking at the characters, the use of sound, the visual setting and the films genre. The illusionary effect of Malick’s style means that all is not as it seems.

Over the years, musicians have composed songs exploring political matters that serve as anthems to the cause. Artists such as Bob Dylan and Clint Black have utilised their influence in the music industry to speak out against war and violence, with songs such as “Masters of War” by Dylan and “Iraq and I Roll” by Black, which both take on polarising perspectives on wars and acts of violence, the Cold War and Iraq War, respectively. Without explicitly stating their respective opinions, both songs use musical techniques to highlight their points of view. Their differing stances on war are manifested through bias, dissimilar styles of music and the different references expressed through imagery in both songs.
In the stories, “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” written by Leo Tolstoy and “Sonny’s Blues” written by James Baldwin these representative narratives lead their readers to conclusions about the thematic/values issues they have raised. At the end of both these stories, they both have that same theme and meaning of what both authors are trying to tell the readers about life, and how much people should appreciate the time that we have, and whom you are spending the cherished moments together. Each of these stories come to a reasonable conclusion on all the problems the characters had no choice to face the hardships of their lives that made them all realized and glanced back on how thankful they were.
"After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain" (332). This last line of the novel gives an understanding of Ernest Hemingway's style and tone. The overall tone of the book is much different than that of The Sun Also Rises. The characters in the book are propelled by outside forces, in this case WWI, where the characters in The Sun Also Rises seemed to have no direction. Frederick's actions are determined by his position until he deserts the army. Floating down the river with barely a hold on a piece of wood his life, he abandons everything except Catherine and lets the river take him to a new life that becomes increasing difficult to understand. Nevertheless, Hemingway's style and tone make A Farewell to Arms one of the great American novels. Critics usually describe Hemingway's style as simple, spare, and journalistic. These are all good words they all apply. Perhaps because of his training as a newspaperman, Hemingway is a master of the declarative, subject-verb-object sentence. His writing has been likened to a boxer's punches--combinations of lefts and rights coming at us without pause. As illustrated on page 145 "She went down the hall. The porter carried the sack. He knew what was in it," one can see that Hemingway's style is to-the-point and easy to understand. The simplicity and the sensory richness flow directly from Hemingway's and his characters' beliefs. The punchy, vivid language has the immediacy of a news bulletin: these are facts, Hemingway is telling us, and they can't be ignored. And just as Frederic Henry comes to distrust abstractions like "patriotism," so does Hemingway distrust them. Instead he seeks the concrete and the tangible. A simple "good" becomes higher praise than another writer's string of decorative adjectives. Hemingway's style changes, too, when it reflects his characters' changing states of mind. Writing from Frederic Henry's point of view, he sometimes uses a modified stream-of-consciousness technique, a method for spilling out on paper the inner thoughts of a character. Usually Henry's thoughts are choppy, staccato, but when he becomes drunk the language does too, as in the passage on page 13, "I had gone to no such place but to the smoke of cafes and nights when the room whirled and you
Intertextuality is the relationship between texts, writers and directors use this technique to reference other text all the time. Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff’s The Lion King uses the intertextuality technique of allusion of the play The Tragedy of Hamlet Prince of Denmark written by William Shakespeare. There are lots of similarities that connect the two together but also a lot of differences that keep them there own separate texts. The context, plot and characters all have some sort of intertextuality.
