Manushi Vatani Dr. Day ELA Pre-AP As young adolescents make the transition from middle to high school, ambiguous behaviors are becoming increasingly evident. Hoping to improve these behavioral issues among freshmen, certain schools are reestablishing their system so that 9th graders are isolated from the larger high school community. This will result in negative outcomes for the community as well as for these young adults. As 9th graders grow they eventually mature into sophisticated young adults, this transformation takes place over time and occurs as they adjust to their new environment. By placing them in an environment in which they are separated from the high school community, their process of maturing is delayed and sometimes even halted.
Many students become more disengaged from school as they progress from elementary to middle to high school. It is estimated that 40 to 60% of urban, suburban and rural high school students become disengaged from school (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Dymicki and Durlak, 2008). Throughout the length of schooling, students go through various changes. In their first year of school, children are required to make the transition from being at home for the entire day to being in school for a number of hours a day. These transition periods happen many times through the schooling years, but the most drastic changes occur during the transition from high school to college, where students weather numerous lifestyle changes. While each individual student goes on their own journey, certain themes remain common between different students.
