Describe what each value means to you as a professional in training and discuss what attitudes and behaviors are associated with each value. There is eight fundamental values of the human services profession. They all possess a unique quality. Knowing and practicing these values aids in providing adequate service to those in need. The eight fundamental values of human service profession are as follows: respecting the dignity and welfare of all people; promoting self-determination; honoring cultural diversity; and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity. (NOHS, Pg. 1) When I think of these values individually I define them as follows: Respecting the dignity and welfare of all people- This act is done by practicing its title. Respecting individual’s ignominy is vital and helps to build admiration and regard. Respect should be displayed for all people and helpers should remove all bias when servicing those in need. Patriotism and prosperity should be transparent and the well-being of those in need should be priority. Promoting self-determination-This act is done by guiding the service user to making a choice in their life that would cultivate goals.
This act is not the decision of the human service professional, the service user must make the decision on their own to change. The human service professional is there to guide, affirm, and provide resources for the betterment of the service user. Being assertive and affirming ones attributes is a plus with promoting self-determination. A helper’s frame of mind and how it is displayed could also be an affective component in regards to one’s attitude and purpose. Continued improvement and merit are the rewards of
self-determination. Honoring cultural diversity-This act is done by respecting all people regardless of their race, gender, or religion. To do this properly is to remove all bias. This act breaks down all barriers and opens communication between all humanity. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and approaching this value should be view an open mind. Human service profession work to collaborate, learn, and combine all cultures if possible. This is to provide harmony and diversity among cultures. Acting with integrity- When I think of the word integrity; I relate it with being honest and having strong morals. In regards to the human service field I believe integrity is an important aspect. Having morals and values aids the helper in providing the best service possible. Acting with integrity should be a rule of law and taught at a young age. Being reliable and acting fairly is something helpers should pride themselves with; this could help build an understanding relationship between the service user and helper. Acting honestly- This aspect eliminates the helper from giving false hope. Positive regard towards the service user helps to build rapport. Telling the truth and being sincere is helpful in the field. A helper should be truthful and trusting. This eliminates providing dishonest information and diagnosis. Being honest helps to build rapport and avoids any unforeseen circumstances that’s lead by deceitful expectations. Being genuine/displaying genuineness- Human service profession need to be genuine in the field. There is various situations and people; that helpers will encounter on the daily basis. Being genuine helps the service user know the helper cares about their situation. Being open and sincere is a characteristic shared to express their authenticity. Showing true concern and empathy towards the service users allows them to see that you are genuine and actually care. Acting objectively- Be a human service professional provides you with many situations of learn fact and demonstrating practices accurately. This means helpers must be efficient and resourceful. This aids in providing the most effective information needed for the service user’s situation. All individuals are different, therefore, one method may work for one person, but doesn’t work for another. It is a helper’s duty to guide the service user in finding the best solution to their circumstance.

If I begin to think in those terms I will lose the ability to see issues form the perspective of others. For example, I may value helpfulness, but if there is a place or time in which I am not properly trained or informed then I am not operating with competency. How helpful am I being if I provide inadequate service? I must always reevaluate my role, and the way my values impact my practice. There could be serious implications in my work as a social worker if there is conflict that arises between my values. I feel that considering if harm would come from me acting on one value instead of another in a time of conflict may be what informs my choice. For example, if my value of respecting the dignity and worth of a person means respecting an individuals cultural norms, but this cultural norm is threatening the safety of an individual then I will have no choice but to go against that value, and protect the safety of the person who is being threatened or harmed.
It is important for a Human Service worker to be familiar with the current and widely used theories. Theories can help the Human Services worker plan treatment for a client and decide which direction they want to would like to go with a particular client. Some of the theories that will be examined throughout this paper include Behavior Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. An analysis of the theories used within the Human Services field, helps individuals that are new to the field, like myself, pick the theory that suites them best.

As an upcoming social worker I understand there are certain traits I portray that are strengths in the social work field. I also understand that were there are strengths, there are weaknesses. I did not realize what my strengths and weaknesses were until I began to practice in the field. Some strengths I have found in myself are good listening skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and time management skills. Along with those strengths I have found my weaknesses are speaking what I believe about a situation, procrastination, and taking on too much responsibility.

Prior to having the class of Professional Values and Ethics, I assumed I understood the basic concepts of what defines a professional who has competence of values and ethics. Nevertheless, by being enrolled in this course, I have gained great knowledge of which professional values and ethical principles must be held by a social worker, which I did not know before. Progressively in this class, by learning professional values and ethics, my motivation to succeed as an upcoming social worker has gotten stronger.
