Victor, the main character, embarrasses himself many times during his first day in seventh grade in order to impress a girl named Teresa, but in the end, he learns a few lessons. In the story “7th Grade,” by Gary Soto, Victor raises his hand and replies with a made up sentence, “La me vave me con le grandma,” when his French teacher asks the class if anyone speaks French. It is quite clear that Victor does not know French, yet he attempts to make it look like he does. Obviously by now Mr. Bueller is fully aware of Vicor’s French skills, and is left with a bad impression of Victor. In addition to this situation, Teresa now believes that Victor can speak French and in result asks Victor to teach her French. Although Victor might not be a very
good French tutor, he was determined. This is a very important lesson Victor learned; no matter what circumstances you're in, do not give up, and eventually, something extraordinary will happen. In conclusion, even if Victor had made some embarrassing decisions this day, he had a learned a lesson and is now able to study with Teresa.
“High School Confidential”, an article written by film critic David Denby for the New Yorker in 1999, accurately disputes and criticizes that high school related movies get their genre clichés from other high school movies that are out, as well as emotions of writers from their own high school years. Denby backs this claim up with multiple examples showing the stereotypes of high school movies, and explaining how those stereotypes are incorrect, such as the stereotypical princess in the school, the standard jock-antagonist, and the outsider/nerd character, and then he shows that all of these examples stem from the “Brian de Palma masterpiece Carrie”. David Denby’s purpose is to show readers how most high school movies are over-stereotyped
In the story,” Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, Victor learns that his embarrassing moments lead to bad things. In paragraph number 18 and 19 it states that Teresa, the girl victor likes, smiles at him and says hi and victor says yeah that’s me back to her. This proves of how Victor got embarrassed because he should of said something different back like hi or hey. This is why he embarrassed himself in front of Teresa. In the paragraphs 36 through 60, Victor embarrasses himself by trying to speak french to empress Teresa but it sounds like he is speaking gibberish. This shows that he is embarrassing himself by acting like he can speak french, but only the teacher knows that isn’t real french. Victor now knows that he shouldn’t raise his hand and tries
In the story, “Seventh Grade,” Victor, the main character, learns valuable lessons such as to think before you say something and that hard work pays off, through his embarrassing situations. For instance, in paragraph twenty-three and twenty-four, Soto wrote that Victor was asked by his teacher to give an example of a noun, but accidentally gave the name of his crush, Teresa’s, and all the girls in the class started giggling since they knew about this. Here, Victor was so infatuated with Teresa that he didn’t realize what he was saying, causing him to embarrass himself. He learned that he shouldn’t let himself lose control since he might further cause embarrassment. In addition, the author wrote in paragraph 43, that Victor volunteered to speak

The first time Kingston had to speak English in kindergarten was the moment silence infiltrated her world. Simple dialogue such as “hello” or asking for directions was hell for her because people usually couldn’t hear her the first time she asked, and her voice became weaker every time she tried to repeat the question (422). No matter what, speaking English just shattered her self-esteem.

“SET,†The starter exclaims as our 4x400 team and all the others wait in anticipation; the whole stadium is in absolute silence. Then, BANG, the starting pistol has goes off. The battle for the fastest 4x400 time in Arkansas has began. Bentonville High School’s team is composed of: Senior Billy Horton, Senior Harrison Shewmaker, Freshman Devin Dougherty, and myself. (I was a sophomore at the time.) This was my first time being on this relay team and I was petrified of letting my team down, especially on this big of a stage; the State Championship. I begin thinking of all the hard work I had put in to get here, all the hours, all the sweat. As I await the bouton to run my leg in the race I have a flashback to all the events leading up to this race, the things that got me here.
“Against School, How public education cripples our kids, and why”, an article written by John Taylor Gatto states that the ideal of schooling is not providing the main objective to students as well as it should. The main reason of schooling is to allow each student to have the opportunity for an education. Johns argues that the education system in America is not providing the right education, as it should be. He says that what it’s actually doing to the majority of students, as well for teachers, is causing boredom and imprisoning children in a building, and labeling it as children obtaining an education. John Taylor Gatto argues that going to school is not the only way to gain a proper education; he states that it is not always necessary for students to attend school to be given an education.
Señor Bravo was a quirky freshman-level Spanish teacher who always managed to brighten his students’ days. The man always came into class with a gleaming smile and a different and eccentric tie on his neck every day. His teaching style, speaking habits, and gentlemanly mannerisms were concrete evidence of his old age. His class was less about learning Spanish and revolved more around passing on the important lessons he amassed from his lifetime. He preached about how smoking was one of the biggest regrets and often told cautionary tales about his rebellious youth in Spain. “I am only telling you these stories so that you guys can avoid the mistakes I’ve made in the past,” he warmly told his classes.
In my old elementary school, Shipley’s Choice, I used to be bullied. Though people still try to push me around, I learned not to pay my mind to them. Shipley’s Choice Elementary school is considered to be on the higher end of middle-class public schools, with all its snotty brats, it felt like Hell. This situation began around second to fourth grade. There was a lot of hatred towards me because I was and kind of still am, a weird person. I had long hair and acted like a weird, modern-day 2010s kid. I was essentially before my time. However, people used to pick on me, call me horrid names, and even hit me! I was depressed, hiding behind a fake smile. Some of my former bullies are now some of my closer friends. But, I was like an outstretched rubber band about to snap. Luckily I never did. I had expected the school to help me, but I was the only one in a major amount of trouble, as I verbally retaliated.
In this article, Jack W. Meiland suggests that there is a huge difference between college and high school: the shift of thinking ways. In high school, students are required to memorize facts that provided by authority without any doubts; but for students in college, they need to use critical thinking to query the “facts” before they believe it. “What the fact is” and “if it is true” composite the thinking way that encouraged by college. Secondly, Meiland talks about “good reasons” and “bad reasons” by supposing an example about a kidnapped businessman. Two reasons can both support a belief, but “good reasons” which can be rationally defended are more likely to be the truth. Before coming to a conclusion, people should find enough reasonable
The city of Naples Florida is where my parents met and in 1994 fell in love and started a family. Their ultimate goal was to make sure that we, my two older brothers and I did our best in school and went to college. My parents made sure that we did our homework every night and read for at least thirty minutes every night also. One of their many reasons of coming to America was for a better life with so many opportunities. They both came from one of the most poorest countries in the caribbean, Haiti. They left Haiti with the biggest dreams in which they would conquer in America. And I believe that it is their ultimate goal for us to have a better life and to have one we must work hard in school. I remember as a child how I use to draw all the
During my Senior year at Middletown High School they added a brand new class called Career Internship, I was lucky enough to be apart of the first ever Internship class at Middletown High School. There was many options for my Internship but one stood out more than others. I chose to go to Miller Ridge Elementary with the gym teacher. I worked with fourth and fifth graders and played with them and teach them how to do the activities. I feel like me being there with the kids they would try their best and put their best effort into the games we’re playing. One of my favorite memories was when you would walk in and all the kids would be so excited to see you, they would be jumping up and down yelling my name and run up to me and I would give every
