In Schooltalk: Rethinking What We Say About - and to - Students Every Day, Mica Pollock provides readers with fact-based information to “flip the script” of the misrepresentation of students in the education setting. Pollock demonstrates how race, gender, and ethnic labels can be detrimental to student achievement. She, then, dives in to 600 years of myths regarding social race labels and how they continue to affect humans today. By correcting race, gender, and ethnicity label myths in our minds, we can effectively advocate for these students. To conclude the book, Pollock focuses on how to devise a plan to correct our own misconceptions and foster a supportive environment for diverse students. Throughout
“Fremont High School” an essay written by Jonathan Kozol presents a high school in need of transformation and support with educational advancement. Kozol writes about the limited educational opportunities available to the students that attend this lower class institution. Kozol addresses the overcrowding of this institution and lack of consistent staffing. The purpose of Kozol 's essay is to illustrate that lack of opportunity based on social class is an active crisis in the United States educational system, whereas addressing this crisis in the essay, Kozol would hope to achieve equal opportunities available to all socioeconomic class institutions.
What is your definition of gun control? In the essay “There is a reason they choose schools”, you will discover what gun control means to Timothy Wheeler. Wheeler is a major part of the organization, Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership. He has written an essay in which he is trying to prove that without being able to use self-defense, guns pose a public health risk. Wheeler has worked with many physicians, medical students, and scientist who support his theory. By doing extensive studies in previous gun violence cases, they want to prove guns are more than just a health issue, they are a health crisis. Not only to those who carry them, but also to those who don’t. In many of these studies, they used schools as the primary target of gun violence.
The average human would think that going to school and getting an education are the two key items needed to make it in life. Another common belief is, the higher someone goes with their education, the more successful they ought to be. Some may even question if school really makes anyone smarter or not. In order to analyze it, there needs to be recognition of ethos, which is the writer 's appeal to their own credibility, followed by pathos that appeals to the writer’s mind and emotions, and lastly, logos that is a writer’s appeal to logical reasoning. While using the three appeals, I will be analyzing “Against School” an essay written by John Taylor Gatto that gives a glimpse of what modern day schooling is like, and if it actually help kids
The ability for all children from varying walks of life to receive a well-rounded education in America has become nothing more than a myth. In excerpt “The Essentials of a Good Education”, Diane Ravitch argues the government’s fanatical obsession with data based on test scores has ruined the education system across the country (107). In their eyes, students have faded from their eyes as individual hopefully, creative and full of spirit, and have become statistics on a data sheet, percentages on a pie chart, and numbers calculated to show the intelligence they have from filling out bubbles in a booklet. In order for schools to be able to provide a liberal education, they need the proper funding, which comes from the testing.

In the text, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, author Diane Ravitch explores her ideological shift on school reform and the empirical evidence that caused this shift. Once a proponent and contributor of testing, accountability, choice, and market reforms, Ravitch’s support began to diminish as she realized that these current reforms were not viable options. She came to realize that the new school reforms focused entirely on structural and managerial adjustments and that no focus was given to actual learning.
A man carrying two revolvers and two 9mm semi-automatic handguns calmly strode into the Dunblane Primary School. Two people quickly spotted the firearms and tried to tackle the man; he shot them and left them wounded as he continued his journey down the hall of the school. Finally, the man reached his destination: the gym, where a class a kindergartners were having P.E. In the gym, he pulled out the guns and started picking off the five-year-olds one by one. The room was splattered with blood as young children broke like porcelain dolls under the power of the gun. The blood continued to flow, but the intruder did not stop; he took careful aim to make sure he didn't miss. The final insult came when he shot the teacher who was shielding kids with her body. Once he killed her, he killed the kids she was protecting. When he finished in the gym , he turned around walked out, shot at a class as he walked down the hall and walked out into the courtyard. In the courtyard, the killer ended the ordeal by taking his own life (Pederson).
I am currently reading a book called “WORD NERD” by Susin Nielsen. Ambrose is a twelve-year-old, he calls himself as a word nerd because he loves to play scrabble. He kept on moving from places to places with his overprotective mother, Irene. Until the last school he attended, he was in a near-death experience. There were bullies that bullied Ambrose that he can’t afford to buy a Nike shoe but instead he wore a shoe from a shoe brand called “Ikes”. Ambrose called the three bullies “The three Stooges”. The bullies knew that Ambrose had a peanut allergy, they decided to test if that fact is true or not. They sneakily slipped a piece of peanut into Ambrose’s lunch. Ambrose took a bite of his lunch, he fainted and he went to the hospital. The principal called “The Three Stooges” and Ambrose’s mom, Irene to have a discussion about Ambrose's visit to the hospital. The principal decided to give them the proper punishments to “The Three Stooges”. Irene knew that a normal school would not be proper for his learning environment, she decided to put him into home school.

When Chris, after an altercation with Miss Desjardin, refuses to appear for the detention, she is suspended and barred from the prom and tries to get her fat...
John Taylor Gatto argues in “Against School” that schools are institutions that make children become servants to capitalism, and to achieve such a goal, schools oppress the curiosity in children. I claim that such a statement is false; high schools have a new goal of teaching students so that they become educated adults. Through my experiences, I would say that high school students have the ability to seek their passions. While grade schools, especially grades 1-5, cannot give such a freedom to young children as they lack reason and judgement to make choices at an early age. High school students have the judgement to make their own choices and now have to ability to do so. In my experiences, schools are institutions where one is able to take

“Changing Educational Paradigms” is a video where Sir Ken Robinson explains why he believes the current educational system has to change in order to stop the rise of American students being treated for ADHD. Robinson reveals that schools haven’t changed since the 18th century where the enlightenment and the industrial revolution had a lot to do with how American schools were designed to work. American schools are still organized based on the production line mentality, and intelligence was based off deductive reasoning and knowledge of the classics, all of this is deep in the academic gene pool. Robinson states that while they are trying to change the educational system they are doing so by doing what they did in the past. Which is something

Are kids not spending enough time at school? Kids now-a-days spend about seven and a half hours at school five times a week, and sometimes less due to holidays or other occasions. According to Meg Stewart in “More Time in School” she says that the kids school schedule is “outdated” as well as created to help a generation where kids had to go back home to help their parents with farm duties. Times have changed and the only person kids usually come home to is one parent or guardian. She also mentions how kids schedules interfere with their parents’ work schedule so they should accommodate the parents work hours. Due to lack of time spent at school extra curriculum activities have been removed, so those should be re-integrated. Overall, she says
