4-H has been apart of my family for three generations. Both my grandfather and father were apart of 4-H, so ultimately that meant I was too. Ten years my seem like a long time, but really I feel like I just started yesterday. Looking back, I can see the impact that 4-H has made in my life. It has given me the responsibility to care for others and further my interest into caring for people. Being apart of 4-H for ten years has given me many opportunities than most. I have been a volunteer at 4-H’s yearly boot camp and 4-H’s Camp Tecumseh in Lafyette. I have only volunteered a few times at boot camp, but looking back now, I wish I would have volunteered more. When I was a volunteer at boot camp, I was in charge of approximately fifteen young
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
In The Big Field, author Mike Lupica explores the theme, "Success uses motivation as fuel." Lupica portrays this theme through the main character, Hutch. Throughout the entire book, Hutch, a young boy that has just recently joined a highly talented baseball team, displays moments that exemplify this main theme. Hutch and his team have a chance to play in the stadium of the Miami Marlins, a Major League Baseball team, as long as they can keep winning games and advancing through a challenging tournament; however, Hutch's favorite position on the field, shortstop, the position located between 2nd and 3rd base, has already been filled on the team. Unfortunately, Hutch gets a demotion from shortstop, to second base, the position located between 1st base and 2nd base. Although Hutch was disappointed and melancholy about the switch in position, he was even more upset about the downgrading of leadership, since the
The production of Honky is a satirical comedy, following the lives of five people and the language of racism. While it focuses on the plot of 5 characters, the storyline was well thought out and intriguing. One actor in specific, Gerard Joseph, who played Thomas, did an exceptionally well job at conveying emotion and projecting to the audience, in my opinion. The overall directing, from the actors to the soundtrack and lightning, seem to be presented with excellent detail. Overall, this production was well done.
Julius Caesar is mentioned throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, many times. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael would be reading Julius Caesar or a soldier would be reciting some of the speeches in the play. In Chapter 12 of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is called over to talk with Lieutenant Jabati. Then, Lieutenant Jabati showed Ishmael the book he was reading, which was Julius Caesar, and asked Ishmael if he had ever heard of the book. Ishmael had read the book in school, and began to recite a speech from the book. After this happened, Lieutenant Jabati and Corporal Gadafi used emotional arguments to motivate the people in the village to stay there and support the military. Also, Lieutenant showed all the people in the village dead bodies to help
Piaget believed that a child’s development is neither intrinsic (learning based on interest) or extrinsic (learning from an outside force, such as a parent). He believed that a child develops based on his or hers interactions in the environment (Mooney 2000). Piaget created four stages of cognitive development, some of which can be seen in the film “Cheaper by the Dozen”. A few examples of characters that display Piaget’s theory are the twins, who are in the preoperational stage and lack the concept of conservatism, and the mastermind, who is in the concrete operational stage and show's the concept of decentralism. These characters will have Piaget’s theory applied to them in the following paragraphs.
The main character in my book “Tucket´s Gold” by Gary Paulsen is about a teenage boy named Francis Tucket who lived in the mid 1900’s This brave character was taken from his parents over a year ago by Pawnee Indians while traveling the Oregon Trail. He held captive for days until he was rescued by a one armed mountain man named Mr. Grimes who trained him and gave him the skills so he could survive out in the wild. Now he is in charge of 2 orphans named Billy and Lottie and is tracking down his parents on the Oregon trail until he stumbles upon an ancient treasure and is being chased by bandits. Now he has use his great character traits such as being caring, protective, and skillful to stay alive. Throughout the story these traits affect Francis because without these exact traits such as being skillful he would have never survived on his own after being separated from his parents in turn, he would have never been caring or protective because he would have never found Lottie and Billy to be caring and protective to, and if he wasn’t protective or caring they all would have all died during the encounter with the bandits because he would not care. So as can see these traits change him from a boy “with plenty” and a fairly wealthy family to a caring, protective, and
Defining the American character is quite difficult because American identity is vaguely founded on shared values and ideologies, more so than a particular creed, race, or culture. In order to describe the American character, we will consider the dominate and distinctive qualities of Americans as interpreted by J. Hector St. Jon De Crèvecoeur and Thomas Paine. First, we will examine how Crèvecoeur illustrates Americans as industrious, prideful, and political in “Letters from an American Farmer.” Then, we will analyze from Thomas Paine's “Common Sense” how he depicts the prevalent qualities of Americans to be driven by justice, liberty, emotions, and individualism. Also, because both authors consider the American character and culture different
4-H has helped me tremendously and I am intend to do the same for future 4-H generations. I will continue to volunteer for various 4-H events such as teaching project days and the fair. My club currently has alumni help at some of our meetings such as highway ditch cleanup and our community projects. I plan to come back to help the young 4-Hers learn the importance helping one's community and assist them in doing just that. In addition, I hope to one day be a judge in the county fair for the science project areas and an interview judge in poultry as well as bid in the Blue Ribbon Auction. I am so thankful for all of the volunteers that have made my 4-H experience wonderful and hope to be as impactful for future generations.
O Pioneers! tells the enchanting story of the Swedish, immigrant Bergson family in the fictional town of Hanover, Nebraska. Although the story is told on a third point of view, the attention is clearly on Alexandra Bergson, sometimes switching the attention to other fictional characters. Alexandra is portrayed as a brave, intelligent and generous lady who not at once thinks about herself and rather depends on other people’s happiness. Throughout the short novel she does, indeed, find herself showering in wealth, but as the story draws closer to an end, her grief grows immense and endless with sparks of hope here and there. The people
Noah is the one of the main characters of The Notebook. He is the hero of this novel. Noah represents true love and true loyalty. In a way, The Notebook is similar to every modern day romance movie, and Noah represents the “dream man” that all the girls always imagine of having. The characters in movies are used to symbolize ideas, and in this novel, Noah represents true, faithful, committed love. Noah remains loyal to Allie even in the situation where he is unsure whether they will ever meet again or not.
I believe that Hap and Biff were taught that they need to do anythng in their power to succeed, even if that means thievery. In this flashback scene, Willy is trying very hard to impress Ben with his life. Ben had offered Willy to take a job opportunity in Alaska, but Linda appears to inform Ben that Willy will not be able to take it. Ben becomes witty with Willy and asks him if he can reach his success. Willy backfires at Ben and brags about Biff who is a football player about to start college. Willy does not believe that it is important what you do, but being liked by people. It seems as if Willy screwed it into Biff and Hap that you have to do what you can to impress people. Whether it is having the best looking girlfriend or the best
It talks about how even long term low doses can lead to these cancers. So, we can imagine how high the doses of radiation the machine and the island must of had to lead them to that death. The narrator is unreliable character because he is living on an island that is unhealthy and brings death to those that come. The island is not made for someone to live there. There is nothing sustainable for a person to survive on. Whatever food or maybe resources have all been contaminated. The narrator says, “Hundreds of dead fish were floating on the water when I arrived, and removing them was an obnoxious task,” (Casares 16). The food and things he is eating makes him sick and hallucinate, “I was ill, haunted by hallucinations,” (Casares 13). He can’t
Being a part and volunteering with the Salvation Army multiple time throughout the week has shown me the real and severe need that is present in my community and has forced me to step up do something about it. From helping children with homework and academic assignments, which shows the children that they are not alone and people do care about them, their success in life, and their educational journey, to being a part of a wrestling club with the mission of keeping young men and women out of the streets, I do my best to assist and serve people, while showing God in everything that I do. Being a part of the USA Wrestling program in my city has greatly impact the lives of teenagers who would normally be getting into trouble with the law, but instead they are in a wrestling room getting instruction from coaches and peers who care about them. I am grateful for the platform that I am given, I have the ability in between practice time to show my peers by my actions and by my words that I care for them as a person and by my actions they see that I live a christ based life. In everything that I do, I do not want to just offer lip service to people, but offer tangible and significant assistance along with
During my time volunteering there, I was heavily involved in the youth program, where I helped with homework after school and planned fun weekend activities. After graduating and finalizing my decision to attend Howard University, I knew wanted to continue serving even while thousands of miles away from home. So, when I found out that DC’s Ward 1 (the ward that HU is in) is considered a food desert, I joined a food justice organization which fed over 50 people affected by daily hunger during Thanksgiving break. Looking to the future, I know that I want to continue positively impacting others and I want to create change on a larger scale, beyond my small hometown and beyond Washington D.C Despite the uncertainties that I may have about my specific career path, I know that through my international business major I want to serve and support global
Volunteering to me is much more than just something I’m doing to build my resume, its something that I actually enjoy doing. In high school I was heavily involved in Key Club, an international service organization that promotes aiding others and student leadership. The collegiate version of Key Club is Circle K International (CKI), which is another Kiwanis sponsored organization; this organization advocates and performs community service at hundreds of campuses across the globe. I decided to join Circle K in college to continue evolving with an organization whose goal is to help develop community-minded leaders.
