The ideas of fascism during 1919-1939 were incredibly appealing to Europeans, as they were looking for a system to rely on during the Great Depression and recovery after the First World War. To understand why fascism is so reliable, one should observe the strengths it gave the people. War economy, allowing the people to work and grow as a country. Leadership, Mussolini and Hitler won over the crowd, promising a better future. And Nationalism, a major goal and part of Fascism, is bringing the people together. Thus the idea of Fascism was popularized to Europeans due to war economy, leadership, and nationalism during the interwar years. The war economy during 1919-1939 helped popularize Fascism in many ways. First, a war economy can greatly affect …show more content…
In 1931-1933 there was about a 27 percent unemployment rate, but just 5 years later in 1938, unemployment was at an all time low of 2 percent. People could reliably get jobs due to constant war, shown through unemployment rates over the interwar years. What’s more is the people didn’t have a choice, the Nazi party banned unemployment and every man had to take up a job, and if they didn't, they’d risk going to prison. The only people in Germany who couldn’t work were non-Germans, as they didn’t have German citizenship. This environment of wartime factories and manufacturing destined Germany to grow as a country, innovation was bound to happen, and so it did. Volkswagen, a stylish car company that is incredibly famous to this day, originated in Germany and was known as “the people’s car” founded by “Gesellschaft zur prematureening des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH“, a German manufacturing company. Consequently, these factors in the war economy helped popularize Fascism. Though war economy was an incredibly influential factor in people's opinions of Fascism, leadership is arguably a greater factor to the peoples views on …show more content…
Nationalism is another factor in Europeans' support for Fascism. One of Fascism’s main beliefs is to be a nationalistic country. In document 5, “Can It Happen Again?” Hitler created a youth program for the nation of Germany. One of the slogans for this program is “We were born to die for Germany”. Following this slogan is the strenuous and physical training program, there was training of weapons and lectures on the Nazi ideology. This extreme nationalistic view brings the people together in order to support Fascism. He extended these beliefs further with his book Mein Kampf where he advocates loyalty to Germany, racial purity, and the master race (German). This advocacy for pure Germans brought them together to support Hitler and support Fascism as a whole. But nationalism wasn’t only present in Germany, as Italians also managed to bring its people together. Mussolini took power and created the Doctrine of Fascism in 1932. In document 2, Mussolini’s doctrine talks about the dedication to the country and participating in helping the nation prosper, in other words,
It was during the 1920’s to the 1940’s that totalitarian control over the state escalated into full dictatorships, with the wills of the people being manipulated into a set of beliefs that would promote the fascist state and “doctrines”.
To understand why Fascism gained such popularity after WWI, it is essential to find a working definition of what Fascism actually is. According to Benito Mussolini and his document What is Fascism, Fascism is “the conception of the state, its character, its duty, and its aim.” It is concerned primarily and totally with the affairs of state rather than those of the individual. The chief duty of a man in a Fascist nation is to do what he can to elevate the state to higher power or assist the state in whatever means necessary in its goals. As is evident to anyone studying this period in history, Fascism “repudiates the doctrine of Pacifism…” meaning that it is most certainly not afraid to use force or war to accomplish its objectives. A Fascist, especially a male Fascist, aspires to be a hero to his country and an ally to the state or nation of which he is a part. A woman ...
Because fascism has been practiced in a variety of locations, at differing points in history, with no specific guidelines, every seemingly practical definition of fascism is simply too limiting to serve as a proper definition. Furthermore, to speak of fascism in generalizations prohibits one from truly understanding the completely confused concept. To avoid such generalizations, one must look at fascism as it was found in specific examples. Such examples include, Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany. Although these two instances are not all encompassing of the ideology, they exhibit fascism to the greatest proportions. Additionally, these instances allow one to get a vivid and practical notion to what fascism truly is.

Fascism in Italy and Germany, though in many regards very similar - have the same political ideologies, still have many aspects to them that make them different from each other. Before analysing the similarities and differences between the fascism that emerged in Italy and Germany since the very first of 20th century, it is better to discover - what is fascism.
Firstly I will look at some of the effects of fascism, starting with one of the most devastating tragedies the world has witnessed, the holocaust. It is not known who first proposed the term holocaust, but we can draw assumptions as to why it was adopted. The Jewish community are likely to have adopted this name in order to distinguish it from what unfortunately, become the routine cases of war crimes and genocide. When we look at the figures of deaths in the holocaust, we do not even need to examine the way in which many of the victims died, to understand just how horrific the effects of fascism had been.
In 1787, several states got together to revise the Articles of Confederation. By doing this they changed the course of our history. Anti-Federalists were against the ratification of the constitution while Federalists were working towards it. Federalists were trying to convince everyone about the benefits of checks and balances. After the Bill of Rights was added to the constitution, citizens were more at ease about the ratification process.
Fascism is defined as, “an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.” Peter Hyland reports that throughout the 1920s and the 1930s, an economic depression was growing and becoming widespread throughout the world. People were losing faith in their democracies and in capitalism. Leaders who gained power supported powerful militarism, nationalism, and initiated the return of an authoritarian rule. J.R. Oppenheimer says that the rise of fascism and totalitarianism in Europe and Russia instigated a “critical step on the path to war.”
In the year 1929 their was a large depression in the country of Germany. This depression was made up of power struggle and economic distress. The people of Germany no longer trusted the democratic government that they once knew. This allowed Adolf Hitler, the great speaker that he was, to persuade the German people to bring him and his Nazi party into power. Adolf Hitler approached the German people speaking of nationalism which was very much needed after World War I. Not only did he need the...
In conclusion, fascism has proved to be a burden on our history. Although not everyone is informed on exactly what fascism is, everyone should be aware of how fascist movements are started and how dangerous they can be. Hopefully after reading this paper, the reader will have gained a better knowledge of fascism and will know how to spot examples.
"For Fascism, the growth of the empire is an essential manifestation of vitality." It is a governing system best suited for communities who are rising after many years of foreign servitude. (www.fordham.edu) Military conquest was seen as a way to solve the nation's economic problems. The Fascist male was thought to be a Darwinian and not humanitarian. He should ...
Unlike Marxism, Fascism does not believe that class conflict can bring about change, instead fascism believes that class conflict can hurt the integrity of a country. Fascism emerged in Italy in the 20th century to stop the rapidly growing workers movement which was pushing up wages and threatening revolution. Led by Mussolini, they were funded by various wealthy big businesses (the rich minority) in order to smash picket lines and attack left-wing organisers. Fascism was very attractive in its time as democracy was new in much of Europe and not very well established, many of the countries had been run by the monarchy; democracy appeared weak in comparison to a strong charismatic leader.
Each and every individual country has its own ideologies, economies, and ways of governing. In the early 1900’s Italy had developed its own ideology that had a huge impact on the lives of the Italian people. This ideology was known as Fascism. Fascism was not only a way of governing, but it was also known as a social organization. Fascism became what it was in response to the movement of social theories. There is much more behind the idea of fascism such as where it came from, who the creator of Fascism was, and why it was popular among many civilians.
Another reason that had a significant impact was the belief of fascists that their nations were superior to all other people. “Fascism was the governing ideology of Ge...
In the early years of the twentieth century, Italy has created a new system of government, however suffered social and economic conditions. Improvements were made however, poverty and literacy were still problems that have not been solved well. While entering World War I, the nation was neutral up until joining the British and French in exchange for certain advantages. However, it was unsuccessful as Italy failed to take control of the territories that it claimed at the Versailles Peace Conference, and suffered significant losses. The ideology of fascism occurred when the power of Italy was shrinking and the idea of being a pacifist became weak. Benito Mussolini created a group of fascists to represent a means to stop the socialists and the communists coming into his nation.
It was at a discordance with communism and socialism, they shared the same views. Fascism comes in a wide variety of forms of regime, but it is described as a regime of authoritarian. It is not communist, all fascism is rooted in extreme nationalism. Several countries embraced fascism between World War I and World War II. Some, such as Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Belgium, and France, had immensely colossal fascist forms of kineticism.
