Mark Twain is known as a genius for his writing, comedy, and his genius as a satirist. He effectively demonstrates this with his excellent use of the satirical technique of reversal in “The War Prayer” and the satirical technique incongruous juxtaposition in “The Political Candidate”. Twain also effectively uses imagery and satirizes the naivety of the audience to convey his thoughts and feelings about church in “The War Prayer” and his tone on politics in “The Presidential Candidate.”
In “The War Prayer” twain effectively makes use of multiple satirical devices. One similarity that “The War Prayer” and “The Political Candidate” have in common is the expertise used to satirize the naivety of their respected audiences. Twain satirizes the naivity of church attendees; he does so by having the elderly man provide indisputable proof that by praying for the success of their own troops they are praying for the failure, death, and massacre of the soldiers on the opposing side, after the elderly man informs the church goers in what they are doing the elderly man is...
