The Shop
For this writing essay assignment, and just the simple fact that go to this place almost every other week, I choose to write about something that I was extremely comfortauble with, and that’s going to the barber shop. Over my life I have been to many different barbershops, some in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama, though they were all in different states, with different people and personalities, they all had the samething in common, and that was that homey and invinting feeling that they all gave off as you walked through the door. I have been going to the barber shop since I was a baby, so I know its surroundings and what it’s like up close. Although it may not sound very interesting, the shop is a really fun and informational environment. Some people go to their local shops and dont even bother to get haircuts, they just go to hear the lattest gossip and what going on not only localy, but globaly as well. There are even women who work at many barber shops, although they don’t cut hair as the men would, they’re more of a stylist for the women who need their hair done, im pretty sure the beauty shop is just as interesting as the barbershop is, as women love to gossip as well. I look at it like its a sort of art form, I mean there are thousands of different hairstyles that people go to barbershops and request. Cutting hair looks to be so simple and easy by first glance, but as you sit and just study the barbers every move, how carefully he cuts the hair to make sure everything is even and blends it all together, you realize that it takes quite some skill to do. ...that hit me. I just adore the pleasant smell of the hair spray and cleaning liquid that they use in the barber shop, when the barbers are cutting hair. I would go so far as to say that I even love that smell honestly, many people are familiar with the shop smell, like when somebody gets a new haircut, you’ll hear people say “you just got a haircut huh?” and that question itself is genereted from the smell of the barbershop that’s stiched into that persons cltohing for a short period of time.
I believe that the barbershop is a very important place to our African-American culture, it's something that many of us grew up with in our lives, it's a place where you can just go to and be yourself, and enjoy yourself, while being surrounded by a group of different personalities. It is a place that many go to inorder to better themselves, in both apparence and in knowledge.
“Shaving” is a short story about a teenage boy who shaves his dying father. Throughout this story, there are many lines of dialogue, and although they may seem simple at first, most of them have a profound deeper meaning. For example, near the beginning of the book, where his father stays to Barry that “You could have used electric razor, I expected that.” Barry replies by saying that “You wouldn’t like it, you’ll get a closer shave this way.” In this quote, what they talk about on the surface is fairly obvious, the quality of the shave ad the razor. However, beneath the surface of this quote lies a much deeper meaning. Barbershop the Next cut holds a significant value to American popular culture with diverse social economic references. This movie depicts numerous components of subcultural issues that are faced in the black communities of American more notable Chicago, IL. Within the movie Barbershop: The Next Cut there will be an in-depth analysis of how this movie shows different Popular-Culture concepts for example; Ideology and Institutional power. This movie also shows the cultural “Norms” and the distinct language used in the subculture that is portrayed within the movie. The most relevant aspect of this movie that will be focused on will be the inequality of the black community in both race and gender and also the social stratification.

Feminism is an ideology that focuses on women being treated as equals to men in life. “Hairball”, by Margaret Atwood is a feminist story because it illustrates one woman in control of multiple aspects of her life that many women seem to struggle with or lose to a man. It demonstrates the reality of pride hindering success and consequentially suffer loses. In “Hairball” Kat, a middle aged woman, demonstrates control with her health, as she acquired treatment promptly for a health concern involving the female reproductive system. Intimacy, as she controlled her own sexual endeavors, her relationship as she had an upper hand and Identity, and lastly as she controlled her image. As the glass door opens, the din from Second Street fades from your ears. The clean crisp cut of scissors, the flick of combs through wet hair, the buzz of electric clipping shears, and the occasional blast of air from a blow dryer captivate your sense of sound. Joe, a large, bald man, wearing an aqua T-shirt and blue jeans tied up with an old brown leather belt, gives his customary greeting, “Howdy there,” to a man who has just entered. The sign above Joe’s mirror reads: “Hair cuts—ten dollars, Seniors—eight dollars.” It is Saturday morning, and at Leo’s Barber Shop business is brisk. Joe and two other barbers are working at a fast clip, keeping their eyes on the scalps of the customers and periodically throwing quick glances to the line that is forming in the waiting area. Hector, wearing a maroon wind-breaker and baseball cap, is putting an apron on a kid to the right of Joe. Chris is trimming a man’s sideburns, leveling her green, contact-lens covered eye to the shears. Four chairs near the entrance are occupied by men of various sorts. Some are reading newspapers or magazines, while others sit looking out the front window. One man clad in denim is standing outside the shop with a cigarette held to his mouth. The barbers at Leo’s have their work cut out for them today.
It all began my freshman year of high school when I was told about elective classes that would help me decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always had a passion for doing hair, make-up, and nails so that was easy for me to choose an elective. My freshman and sophomore year I decided I would take cosmetology classes. I would spend two hours each day of school in the cosmetology lab, which was always cold and smelled like hairspray, burnt hair from the straighteners or a strong acetone smell that someone gets a whiff of at a nail salon. We learned so much material and I had a good time practicing my skills on manikins and other classmates. Something as seemingly simple as hair can be much more complex when we take the time to think about another person’s perspective, history, values, culture, and feelings. The interaction in Seminole, Texas wasn’t just about a haircut.
I’m sitting with my knees tucked under my chin, waiting for my mom’s turn to be finished, so I can climb up in the hairdresser’s swiveling chair and have the big apron tied around my neck to get my hair cut. I’m singing the lyrics to my favorite song by Deseree (softly so mom doesn’t yell at me) while looking through the books of hair designs on the chair next to me. The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
Within the mostly Hispanic neighborhood Washington Heights there is a multitude of beauty salons and beauty supplies stores. As I am fairly familiar to the area I chose to observe the social interactions of Dominican women getting their hair done instead of my initial reaction to the neighborhood. Starting at Nine am on the rainy Thursday, I observed five women each choosing their respective hairdresser and proceeding to do their hair. The women whom attend the salon are well dressed;with heels, jewelry, and stellar outfits(as if going to brunch instead of sitting under a hood dryer for 2 hours).
