Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as Judeo-Christian Allegory
In the classic children's film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which is based on the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the author and writer of the screenplay, Roald Dahl presents the viewer with a strikingly vivid metaphor that compares fundamental Judeo-Christian beliefs with, that's right, candy. The basic figures in the religion are given representational roles in the film that do not hide, but instead sugar coat their meaning. Even the basic concepts of the religion are cleverly placed in the film so that their symbolism is both recognizable and utilitarian. Overall, the film metaphorically presents the dichotomy of Christianity within the candy context.
The work centers on the world's love for the candy made by Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, an eccentric, who for as long as anyone can remember, has been holed up in his factory to avoid industrial espionage, especially by the infamous Slugworth. Then one day Wonka announces that he is to hold a contest with five winners who will be allowed into his factory for a tour and then given a lifetime supply of his chocolate, a prize which is far more desirable to the characters than any other. This is the point in the film at which, "the plot kicks in," according to Chris Hicks of Deseret News. The winners are to be decided by a game of sorts. Five Golden Tickets are hidden in Wonka Bars and those who find them are the winners. As the excitement grows, the number of available Wonka Bars dwindles. Wonka madness ensues as the narrating newscasters in the film keep the viewer up to pace with the action through constant "this just in" style reporting.

Overall, the film is a great children's movie, as it was intended to be, because it focuses on the results and consequences of certain child-like habits. However, on a more adult level, the film meets with dogma and doctrine from the Judeo-Christian theologies in places that are undeniably intentional. Described by Wm. Humphrey of Film.com, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a grand example of cinematic confectionery - disguising the dark message at its center with a sweet, chocolatey exterior." The film's equivalencies of repentance, redemption, paradise, sin, the wages thereof, and even the Godlike qualities of Wonka himself undeniably present a moral content to adults that is as strong if not stronger than that presented to children.
Some works show their true colors right away. Gene Edward Veith’s book, Reading Between The Lines, addresses philosophical ideas, literary sub genres, and reader criticisms in order to ascertain a Christian’s role in literature. He also goes through various historical periods and examines their more prominent works and schools of thought. While a select few of his conclusions about Christianity in relation to the arts have merit, others contain more damaging implications. Specifically, his statements regarding television represent inaccurate and offensive thinking.
In The Santa Clause when Charlie and Scott first go to the North Pole, Abby the elf talks about the North Pole to Scott saying, “Kids don’t have to see this place to know that it’s real. They just know.” This strikes home for children under the age of six, as the book states in chapter 6, “They believe that effective wishing takes a great deal of skill, and perhaps magic, but that it can be done. In related fashion, many believe that getting in good with Santa Clause can make their hopes come true.” Which correlates perfectly with a study which concluded that the average kid stops believing in Santa around six and a half, and seven-years’-old (Madrigal, 2012). Anyways, Charlie experiences a lot of stress and happiness throughout the movie because of the bioecological model, whether the stress or happiness is due to the microsystem or chronosystem.
In Mark Twain’s book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the character Huck is trying to figure out the struggles of adulthood while also trying to maintain his childlike wonders. Huck experiences many eye opening events, forcing him to grow up and start his adult life at a young age. From having an abusive father, floating down the river with an unlikely friend, and breaking away from society norms, his life was far from childlike dreams. In Twain’s novel, Huck’s experience with honesty, trickery, and perspective help develop the coming of age theme.
I have always loved to read. While most children prefer watching television, I would rather read a book. About two years ago I read the book The Maze Runner, by James Dashner. After reading this book, I realized just how much Christ effects literature. I learned that we can see aspects of Christ in books written by secular authors. You can find Christian allegories that the author didn’t even realize they were writing.
As a child, Hazel Motes is indoctrinated in religious fundamentalism by his grandfather, “a circuit preacher, a waspish old man… with Jesus hidden in his head like a stinger” (9). Time after time young Haze hears the searing sermon of his Bible-thumping grandfather who, in front of a crowd, would point to his grandson, “that mean sinful unthinking boy,” and pronounced him “redeemed”: “That boy had been redeemed and Jesus was not going to leave him ever…. Jesus would have him in the end!” (10). Understanding Jesus as the “soul-hungry” devourer, as “something awful,” the boy very early comes to the conclusion that “the way to avoid Jesus was to avoid sin” and, at the age of twelve, decides to follow the preacher’s calling like his grandfather. Furthermore, Haze’s mother, with “a cross-shaped face” reinforces the fundament- alist piety in her son by equating the boy’s germination sexuality with sin. They argue that the character Willy Loman fits the mold of a tragic hero, a misguided man unaware of his flaws who comes to discover them through his journey but ends up dying in a tragic way in the end in grand release of tension. However, Willy Loman doesn’t reach the standard of a high status that is required to be a tragic hero. He is simply a typical man, a simple salesman. The theme of growth and maturity is portrayed heavily throughout The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain which centers on Huck Finn, a rambunctious boy whose adventures with a runaway slave build him into a mature young man. The Chronicles of Narnia are veritably the most popular writings of C.S. Lewis. Two characters that are blinded by their own version of living a religious life are Mr. Hines and Mr. McEachern. I will argue that the obsession with their religion and their belief of how it should be followed is an ideology that fails each of these characters in their purpose. Consequently, the more these characters are faced by failure the more they try to embody God and take actions as if they are the Almighty Himself. Ironically, while using religion as a shield these characters fail to see their own sins. These characters see their sins instead, as the most essential and virtuous deeds and the work of God.
