Why I Deserve A Scholarship

While merit is usually based solely on GPA it should also be based on how much the students challenged themselves. I believe I would be a good candidate for the College of Environmental and Life Sciences Scholarship because I have challenged myself while maintaining a high GPA. During the fall and spring I was a member of the URI Women’s Soccer team. The team alone was a huge commitment waking up very early in the morning and attending random events to support other fellow athletes. The addition of challenging courses such as Calculus, Biology, and Chemistry required a lot of focus and organization, not to mention I chose to add an extra challenge by being apart of the honors program and taking an honors course each semester. I knew my study tactics were simply not working so I tried many other ways. I started with one method and finally after 7 more I got to one that helped me understand and retain information. I found that trying to teach the information to another student allowed me to look at the material from all angles because odds are there would be questions or explanations needed. On the third exam I raised my grade 16 points to an 86, but I knew if I wanted to finish with a B I would need a bit more practice. Therefore, a month before finals I found a little cubical in the library and spent 3 hours there every day until about a week before and then I increased it to around 5 hours just for that subject. While I was pushing through chemistry I also had other classes to worry about, while they were not as difficult they still required a lot of physical work. For many of the classes that semester there was written work that was required and for one many speeches were needed.
