Executive Summary
Sri Lanka is well known for its tropical beach resort and water sports, scuba diving and whale watching with over 1600 km of coastline. Ancient heritage site and forest resorts in wild life sanctuary are considered as major attractions in Sri Lanka. There has been a major development in Sri Lanka’s tourism with the reappearance of peace to the country, resulting the May 2009 declaration of certain victory over rebellious forces. Due to the ethnic conflict Sri Lanka’s tourist was affected adversely since 1980’s. After the civil war, the tourism industry was developing with increasing tourist arrivals to 566,200 in 2004. But due to the ceasefire between the Sri Lankan military and the rebel Tamil forces again in 2002, there was a considerable decrease of tourist arrivals in the later years. Sri Lanka's tourism sector is developing rapidly, strengthened by an increasing range of national and international air travel networks and rising awareness of its countless attractions, as well as better safety awareness since the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war. With international tourist arrivals increasing rapidly, Sri Lanka's hotel and accommodation sector is inviting substantial foreign investors. The luxury hotel sector in specific is developing rapidly.
According figure 1 the accommodation capacity in all regions of Sri Lanka increased from 2005 to 2014.In 2002 the accommodation capacity was 13,162 rooms but in 2014 the capacity increased to 18510.This is a rapid increase in the accommodation sector of tourism industry in Sri-Lanka.
