The counseling session should be centered on the client and their understanding of their world and/or problems not heavily weighted on the counselor interpretation of the client’s situation. The role of the counselor is to examine a problem needs changing and discover options in overcoming their problem. Bringing about change can help change the client’s narrative on their problem in the future and/or on life in the process.
Counseling began as a simple form of treatment for emotional problems. It was practiced in the form of advice and information in the
I was really nervous about doing this first practice recording. While I knew how I wanted to start the conversation, I was stressed out about the unknown that comes along with these sessions. I am constantly listening to my friends talk, but how I had to respond for the counseling session was very different than what I am typically used to. I usually give my friends my opinions and advice on how I would handle the situation. It was hard for me to just sit back and let my classmate talk. I wanted to respond to many of her statements, but I had to take a step back and really just listen. In these types of counseling sessions my thoughts and opinions are not important. Rather, the focus should only be on the person you are counseling.
My personal approach to counseling comes from several different theoretical frameworks. Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) has the most influence in what I would consider my personal approach. I truly believe that the way an individual feels about themselves will impact them more than anything else. When an individual feels that they are not good enough then they will continue to struggle in all aspects of their life. Thoughts affect our feelings and our behaviors; therefore, if you are able to change an individual’s negative thinking then you are able to change their feelings and behaviors. Therapists must be able to challenge an individual’s irrational beliefs about themselves and work to change these to more rational thinking. Studies have shown that individuals who are trying to lose weight will have more success if they just believe that they are capable of losing the weight. Just their positive thinking can enhance their personal diet and exercise. REBT will have the greatest impact when working with clients in my personal theory but I will also take many aspects from other theories as well.
I know as I further my education in the counseling field my philosophy of counseling will change. For myself, I feel that I am still young and learning about myself and my surroundings. In my eyes to be suitable to help others I need to continue to grow as a person myself both professionally and mentally. I want to be able to move forward and develop new distinctions and aspects to my philosophy of counseling as time goes on. I hope to continue my growth in understanding of what it means to be a good therapist or counselor by using good theories and techniques to help future clients.
A counselor should always keep their thoughts to themselves and remain open-minded about the situation. The only time a counselor should share their thoughts is if it helps the client with their situation that they are dealing with. “Counselors must practice only within the boundaries of their competence (Standard C.2.a.), and, if they “determine an inability to be of professional assistance to clients” (Standard A.11.b.), they should facilitate a referral to another provider. (Kocet, M. M., & Herlihy, B. J. (2014). Addressing Value-Based Conflicts Within the Counseling Relationship: A Decision-Making Model. Journal Of Counseling & Development, 92(2), 180-186 7p. doi: 10.1002/j.1556-6676.2014.00146.x).” Keeping your thoughts to yourself is
Counselors ' use resilient treatment and other remedies to ensure those who need professional help can get it, resulting in a society that has fewer mentally ill people who can harm others. Counselors are good for everyone who needs it. Their programs are designed to teach, assist, and treat various dysfunctions criminals, victims, and the general public may have. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health personnel such as social workers or family counselors generally conduct treatment (Center for Substance Abuse Treatment,
When I began my studies at the University of Northern Iowa, I had an interest in the field of psychology, but I was not yet sure that I wanted to pursue a career in that area. The classes that I consequently took and the professors that taught them solidified my desire to receive a degree in psychology.
Psychotherapy, or other wise known as talk therapy, is a way to treat people with a metal disorder by helping explain the illness and for them to have a better understanding of what is going on. It teaches people to handle their problems themselves, giving them strategies to work through the issue at hand that day or moment. Psychotherapy ultimately gives the client the power to help themselves with out the therapist having to be there with them in their day to day lives.
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
165). The therapeutic method involves the therapist interacting with the client and inspiring the client’s development “by listening, guiding, instructing, and requiring” (Jones & Butman, 2011, p. 311). In ET, the counseling process is tailored to assist the client in developing through the awareness of knowledge that they are the ones that make the choices and decisions in their life about the direction their life will take. Instead of utilizing a mental illness model, the effectiveness is built on a real, authentic relationship that encourages prosperity and development in the client. The therapist and the client have a relationship, the therapist is a mentor to assist the client in the art of living a full
The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
...nseling sessions is very important, because the wisdom of God can guide counselors to be more effective and accurate in helping clients who has been damage or abused. There are issues that can only be treated with spiritual integration, with this in mind, counselors can prevent many situations that with conventional counseling cannot be prevent. Spiritual guidance had been proved to work on circumstances where other forms of therapy do not work, that’s why the presence of God must be present in counseling sessions, in order to do God’s will and be effective with all the situations that day to day are present in our society.
Counselling gives the young person the opportunity to talk about how they feel within a safe environment. It is sometimes very difficult to talk to those closest to us in fear of upsetting them. That is why talking to someone experienced who is not emotionally involved and who is trained to hear you without judging or giving advice can really make a difference. Speaking to a counsellor away from their social circle, family and school can take away some of the pressure associated with talking about their problems. Being able to talk about their feelings with the counsellor will allow the young person to gain an
