Book Review: The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches
A) Overview of the book
Jeff Janssen and Greg Dale are peak performance coaching, they are highly credible and respected in the field of coaching. The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches explains a new style of coaching. Jeff and Greg talk with a bunch of current and former successful coaches to develop this new style of coaching. Coaching in the past has been fear and intimidating focused. The style they discovered is credible coaching, no longer centered on fear and intimidating but focused around trust and relationships. Credible coaching allows one to get the most out of their athletes while still being respected as the coach. Coach Krzyzewski was one the the coaches interviewed and he hit the nail into the coffin when he said,"Coaching is about relationships. It goes way beyond X’s and O's. You have to create an environment of trust among your staff and athletes. Without trust, you have nothing. If you do have trust, you will be able to accomplish great things."
Credible coaching in no long a secret, the book it explains the seven basic strategies needed to become a credible coach. These strategies and componets will impact your coaching in a lot of ways, it not only helps your team be successful but it helps you to not get burnt out, it will bring back the enjoyment you once felt for the game. The process to becoming a more credible coach is not easy; one must complete a self-evaluation and assess strengths and weaknesses. This part can be hard because of pride but one must be able see his own weaknesses and strengths to become a credible coach. ...o know me as a person, to understand me and know there was more to me than just sports. The caring element to credible coaching is by far, in my opinion, the most important aspect of credible coaching. We all grow old and phase out of our sports, but relationships last forever.
B) how this book affects your coaching endeavor
Not only will I apply these seven secrets to my future coaching endeavors but I will apply them in my everyday life. I believe that these strategies are important for any type of relationship whether that be at work or with your family. I will now look at the big picture and realize that these athletes someday will have to move on and they will need the necessary skills to be able to survive. I want to be the coach where past players can still have a relationship with me and respect me. By applying these components I believe I can achieve that.
