My senior project is about being a coach and how it can be difficult and not an easy task. I wanted to show others that being a coach is something that takes time and effort in order to accomplish it. Being a coach is not a fun job but it is a job that will help you in the future. Coaching is an experience that not a lot of people get to go through but those who do become not just better people but they become teachers to others in troubling times and in time of need. Coaching gives you and also shows you that being helpful and courteous to others actually helps you out as a person and it also helps out the players you’re coaching to be better people and to be kind and not take things in the wrong way and to show them a better way that will help them in their life. As a coach you do fail sometimes and that's what is difficult but Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeeded.” I believe that this goes for coaching as well because you are going to fail over and over again and you will soon see that those failures are actually your accomplishments. Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
Being a volunteer can be a big commitment and just being “well-meaning” (Page 2) is not enough, there also needs to be support and genuine caring. When thinking about coaches we may only think of them as a coach and nothing else, thus letting many people overlook the possible stressors in their lives like family, workload, financial problems, and general stress. Students are at a point in time where endless knowledge is at their finger-tips as a result of the internet, and therefor the teacher or coach is not the “Gatekeeper and judicious disseminator of knowledge” (Chapter 12) as Carol Wilson said in “Performance Coaching: a complete guide to best practice coaching and training” this change creates a power dynamic shift where the coach may just be facilitating learning. Since the coach and their team are both able to access the same level of knowledge the coach could feel power hungry and their frustrations may be reflected in their methods of coaching. The one thing that the internet fails to show us is how to be naturally, emotionally intelligent and is better done by someone like a coach who can tailor their explanation to help their team fully understand. This person needs to understand communication on both sides an individual can not just demand that it's a one way street where you talk and athletes listen. The career of coaching requires history of the game knowledge of the game, extensive education, and positive and negatives aspects of the game.
Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
There are many challenges being a coach or any type of leader. If you are in either of these positions a big challenge would be how to make your organization better than others. Coaches need to come up with a game plan to outperform other teams. This is extremely hard when there are tons of other coaches also trying to do the same thing. The second challenge is implementing the plan you do create. A coach needs to not only be an expert at how to be better than other teams, but also be a proficient teacher. An amazing master plan means nothing if you can’t get your players to execute the plan. The most challenging thing about being a coach is keeping your players motivated. What do people have to do to become a teacher , coach or both? Let me take you back in time. Back then the learned men of ancient times, by default became the teachers. Priests and prophets taught children of the wealthy and noble, the skills to take up their roles as leaders and businessmen. So in other words, people who had knowledge they passed it down. After that knowledge being passed down those people would tell someone else and so on. This, I believe is a very important part of coaching, because as a coach you are looked not only as an authority figure but as a role model.
