There are certain words in which he believes play a great importance in the success he been able to achieve throughout his career. Every single chapter of this book is dedicated to one of those words and he uses that chapter to explain why this word is important to succeed not only in basketball, but also in life. He talked about how all the words are equally as important to a successful team besides his five key words that he emphasized above all others with every team he coaches; communication, trust, collective responsibility, care, and pride. Taking pride in your team will result in your team doing everything the do to the best of their abilities. The more pride you have in the team the more you will even care about everything that you are doing. You should not just look at basketball or any sport as a game of Xs and Os but as more than that. Your players should be more than just players to you and by demonstrating that to them they will come to take pride and care for everyone on the team more. Your levels of care in you team it can even “determine how you perceive your mistakes” (pg 19). The more they care, the more of a positive spin they can put on their mistakes. Prompt #4 Response: Successful team performance first includes a clear sense of self. It is easier to work with a team when you know yourself first and then get to know the others on the team. A defined strategy and a clear vision of success are key in working with a team. Threats to a team are indecisiveness, not understanding your team members. Psychological factors include internal functioning and expectations in team performance.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. The University of Dayton Men’s Basketball Program. There have been many historical moments with the University of Dayton Flyers Men’s Basketball team, but Mark Weaver recalls the one that meant most to him. It took place on March 24, 1967, in Louisville’s Freedom Hall for the Final Four of the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) tournament against the highly favored North Carolina Tar Heels (Collett 228). This was the third straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Flyers, but their first ever Final Four (Collett 228). It turned out that the Flyers smashed North Carolina, seventy-six to sixty-two.
The 1980?s rolled around and the ?Cameron Crazies? (Duke Basketball fans) felt as if there were no hope for their Blue Devils basketball program, but that?s where they were wrong. Along came what is arguably the greatest coach to step foot on a basketball court, Coach Mike Krzyzewski. As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach

Dr. Steven Aicinena from thesportsjournal.org, in the article “When Pride Goes Wrong”, says that athletes will go far enough to have pride as to hurt other players unknown of the consequences. For example, in the article Dr. Steven says, “Athletes experience mental anguish, embarrassment, shame and may come to hate sport as a consequence of strong humiliation. More sinister is the prospect of the athlete feeling poorly about him or herself as a human being” (thesportjournal.org). This quote shows that there is a horrible consequence for those that do not have a balanced life. This quote also reveals that pride does not bring a blessed life, but instead a life full of grief and worry. This quote proves that people cannot be ill-willed to others because they want to feel mighty and proud or else they are going to be the one that will be humiliated instead. One will receive consequences if they are not balanced in their life or show
Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How does a coach become successful? I aim to answer all of these questions and more in my paper.

The ability to work through adversity has been around for many years and with continued research there are more ways being discovered that can enhance success. “It is unfortunate that the concept of mental toughness has lacked clarity, because it has been expressed by both coaches and players to be one of the most vital approaches to performance excellence (Weinberg, Butt & Culp, 2011). Being able to recognize faults within one’s performance and taking personal responsibility and having the self-confidence to accept shortcomings while correcting the issues is important as well in having strong mental toughness. In one particular study there were 10 college head coaches (5 male, 5 female) from the U.S. from various sports who participated. The coaches had a combined number of 119 years coaching.
Some characteristics of great coaches include: encouragement, believing in their athletes enough for them to overcome tough challenges, making their journey enjoyable, respectfully listening, valuing input, commitment, dedication, pushing athletes to their limits, focusing on enhancing confidence and truly caring about the athlete’s well¬‐being. Positive communication is the key to great coaching relationships. Positivity also plays a huge role in team work and team spirit. Helping each other, believing in each other and being genuinely encouraging can raise the team dynamic and performance as well as individual performance. Harmony in a team is when the teammates look for the good qualities in each other and feed off of each other’s drive, determination and positive
From looking at what makes up a team player, it is easy to see what a team player is not. To be a team player, one cannot be selfish or need recognition for one’s individual accomplishments. In not being selfish, a team player will always put the needs of others ahead of his/her own needs. Therefore, not needing recognition for one’s accomplishments is the strong point of the team player; he/she only expresses pleasure when the team as a whole is successful.
