Habits could lead our lives in two directions, A path that leads to success and well-being, or a path that leads to nowhere and laziness. Currently, I am on the path the leads to nowhere and laziness. However, modifying or eliminating a bad habit is not an easy task to accomplish. In the book The Power Of Habit by Charles Duhigg, explains with willpower and determination you can change a certain habit and achieve any long goal you wanted to achieve. A change in bad habits leads to a change in life"(Jenny Craig). Personally, my bad habit is coming home from college, proceed to laying down on my bed and go on my phone, which leads to losing precious time for completing my homework. The change I am trying to accomplish, is eliminating the habit of going to my room and laying down on my bed, using my phone and losing track of time. My first attempt at changing my habit didn't go too well. My first attempt went like this, whenever I went to my room, took all necessary items to do my homework, then proceeded to the living room to finish my homework. That was the plan I was hoping would work. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out too well because of having my phone always in my pocket, which lead to me constantly getting distracted by it. Since the weekend is coming up it might be even more of a challenge to do my homework because I have the" I have so many days to do my homework, I'll do it later" mentality . Duhiggs method is “But to change an old habit, you must address an old craving, you have to keep the same cues and rewards as before, and feed the craving by inserting a new routine"(pg 266) Duhigg stated. Duhigg explains you must discover what your craving is and then change your pattern/routine. Rather of me going into my room and laying down in my bed, I would walk into my room and drop all of my belongings on the floor and proceeded to clean my room. The cue is hearing the thump every time I drop all of my belongings on the floor in my room. The new cue that would replace the thumping noise would be cleaning my room and putting all of my belongings on the table that’s located in the living room. After that, I forced myself to take out all the necessary items that I need for me to finish my homework. Adding on to the method of me getting not distracted would be leaving my phone in my room, where it can’t be in arm's reach. After doing all of those tasks I continued on to do my homework. To my surprise, I finished my homework with less distractions and in less time. I felt so productive and motivated, the feeling of accomplishment. “Finally, there is a reward, which helps your brain figure out if this particular loop is worth remembering for the future”(Pg 19) stated Duhigg. The feeling of accomplishment was the reward every time I finished an assignment. In the end the craving that I desired
