It is practically impossible to live without ever encountering an animal. It is almost as impossible to live without ever being a pet owner. According to the Humane Society of the United States, in 2012, 62% of American households owned pets. The total amount of pets owned by that 62% was roughly 164 million pets (Humane Society of the United States). Think back two years; were you part of that 62%? How did your pet influence you? Did it make you laugh and smile? Did it ever calm you down in a crisis? Did it shower you with an endless amount of love? Was it one of your favorite living beings? Animals, whether big or small, influence people positively with their companionship, appearance, quirky yet adorable behavior, and their presence in general.
Dogs are man's best friend, right? Wrong! Man's best friend isn't just dogs anymore! Many different animals, from horses to fish, make a human life more enjoyable. The perfect animal companion can be found for anyone. Single people and pets go together like peanut butter and jelly; they were made for each other. Stereotypically, cats are solely for single people, but they are not strictly for the lonely. Likewise, single people are not restricted to owning cats. However, cats have been found to reduce negative moods as well as any human partner could (Gygax et. al 213-228). Pet companionship is not only beneficial for single people but also for people who do not have many friends. Pets provide the friendless person with a companion to spend their time with so he or she feels less lonely. Pets that can be taken for walks, like dogs, can also open doors for their lonesome owners or as Bueker states, “On the positive side, I find that dogs act as 'tickets' for people to socialize and deve...

...tress and anxiety levels (PAWSitive InterAction). In other words, staring at Nemo helps people become calm. Since aquariums reduce stress and anxiety, doctors, like a local dentist, Dr. MacDonald, tend to place them in waiting rooms to calm patients. Not everything silent is deadly!
Animals influence us majorly. They can manage to “Turn that frown upside-down,” or ease tension. Service animals allow visually disabled people to live their lives with little dependence and danger. Whether cute or ugly, they bring up our mood. Animals’ odd behavior causes us to laugh, which has positive effects to humans physically and mentally. Aquariums nonchalantly send our brain the message, “Just keep swimming.” No matter the size, age, or species, animals influence humans positively with their companionship, appearance, ridiculously weird behavior, and presence. Think pawsitive!
