The usage of colorful lighting in the show Riverdale serves a variety of purposes, such as creating a mood or showing a character’s underlying qualities. When we see certain colors, they can bring out specific emotions or memories. Advertisers, tv producers, and movie makers know that consumers of visual content have been molded overtime to associate yellow with happiness. Or green with jealousy. It is simply a marketing strategy that has been fed into over the years. In regards to Riverdale, the lighting crew makes a point of using these colors to create a specified ambience for a scene. White is known for being “pure,” or “sincere.” Cheryl wears white to her brother’s funeral. While the two of them were in the boat before they sailed off to where Jason would soon make his demise (or so they thought), the twins were wearing the color white. Some might think, in both these cases, that the color white is somewhat inappropriate for the settings. It is supposed to provide a visual contrast to the circumstances the characters find themselves in. Cheryl specifically is found wearing white the most, and her personality is far from innocent. She carries herself like she owns the whole town of Riverdale. She preys on others and abuses her power as the Queen Bee of her high school. Cheryl wearing white, like when she visited the hospital after Fred Andrews was shot, hints to the viewers at home that the situation is dangerous. Some might say Cheryl wears white to appear angelic, but actually happens to be the devil in disguise. Bourn writes “To the human eye, white is a bright and brilliant color that can cause headaches. In cases of extremely bright light, the color white can even be blinding” (“Meaning of the Color White”). Riverdale takes on the challenge of using a bright, obvious color scheme to subtly suggest the true nature of a person. Through this technique, the creators are able to toy with the audience’s minds and make them believe they know what is going on in their favorite characters worlds. This proves to be convenient for the writers, because they craft a personal struggle and personality for the cast of Riverdale. They are allowed to take the show whatever direction they please, yet they choose to include the watchers and make them undergo the same pain and pleasure that comes with the characters stories. It is by the aid of different colors and the degrees of their hue that the fans of the show may know the key traits that the characters are attempting to hide.
