Sustainability is among the top crucial global issues that the world faces today. Technology has increased dramatically which is creating ecological sustainability issues with the increased consumption of natural resources. The results are products that are increasing our carbon footprint as a whole through pollution and destroying ecosystems. It is important for people to emphasize sustainability in their lives now before these changes are irreversible and the world cannot survive. Many cities around the world are trying to change the impacts that civilization has had on the environment in the past with initiatives in ecological sustainability. The specific grants are funded by “The Greenest City Fund” and are given to groups for projects that help to achieve Vancouver’s goals. The grants are separated by two categories; Charities or Organization Grants and Neighborhood Small Grants. The fund allocates a total of $215,000 per year for the Charities or Organizations with a maximum of $100,000 for each. For Neighborhood Small grants, they allocate a total of $70,000 per year with a maximum of $500 for residents. These grants are important because the city is taking initiative to involve other parties into reaching its goal and realizing that it should be a team effort. By offering the grants they are motivating more residents and groups. Although it is a large amount of money to invest into the strategy, it can potentially lower the costs and create a more sustainable economy. It is not only important for businesses and residents to participate towards a sustainable city but also the government. They must lead by example and change the ways they do things in hopes that it will inspire more to do their part. A quote from their government website that suggests this is “if they are going to look to residents to lower their energy consumption, and take action toward the Greenest City goals, they must "walk the talk" when it comes to City operations and facilities” (Greenest City: A Renewable City). Vancouver is widely considered the greenest city because they are implementing the necessary changes to their city operations to best combat sustainability issues. Some ways in which they have changed is by encouraging local and sustainable food in their facilities and using only consumer recycled copy paper. They have also transformed their buildings to be more energy sufficient through geo thermal heating and cooling and using sensors to control lighting in rooms that are not in use. Vancouver has also changed the ways in which their vehicle fleets operate by purchasing environmentally friendly vehicles that are either bio diesel or electric.
