Tavinor’s article argues that video games should be categorized as art. He outlines competition as one of the reasons that people to object to including games as an art form. However, competing does not take away from the aesthetic value of the game, and like Tavenor stated, if someone were to submit a poem into a contest no one would think twice about considering that art. When does competition start? If someone makes a painting with an intent to make something prettier than their brother has, would that be considered art? I think that competition is not a factor. There are marvelous aesthetics in Spec Ops that I doubt anyone can not call art if they have seen the game. Art has a long history of breaking through molds and forcing people to see concepts differently. For me, I am a fan of single-player games with story modes because I can play by myself and go at a pace that suits me. However, I enjoy playing online multiplayer when I have friends I can play with because it is fun interacting with friends and doing stuff together. Adolescents should be able to differentiate violence in video games, and any kind of media, because of the examples that their parents and elders set for them. If a researcher were to perform a study on the effects of media on adolescents, most people would find that the adolescents that the media does affect negatively probably have other problems contributing to their perceptions. These problems can range from a hostile household, to poor examples the parent or parents give, and even to mental illness. If most adolescents are shown a game like Mortal Kombat (made by Capcom ©) they will be able to differentiate that it is in fact only a game. Video games are mainly neglected by archives and historians as they are difficult to preserve, and a number of other factors makes them unpopular items to preserve. Video games are important as they are objects that signify the culture of our society, mainly in how we entertain, work, and learn.
