According to Scholastic Choices, one in every four teens has been bullied online at some point in their life. Many adolescents have experienced the embarrassment of being bullied online. Some of them, however, are clueless as to how they could pursue help. What exactly is cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is the repeated behavior of harassing, humiliating, or threatening another person online. The question still remains: should individuals be prosecuted for cyberbullying? In my opinion, people definitely should be prosecuted for the atrocious act of cyberbullying. Although this essay will explain why cyberbullies should be prosecuted for their wrongdoings, others may believe that cyberbullies should not be prosecuted. This is already an issue with many adolescents, and cyberbullying worsens it. What can cyberbullying do to someone? It has the ability to lead to depression, self-inflicted harm, and potentially suicide. According to the previously mentioned survey, several of the victims dealt with depression and they contemplated suicide. The adjusted odds ratio, or how likely something will occur, for depression was 4.38, but it was 5.35 for suicide attempts that needed medical help. Both of these numbers are fairly high. The Cyberbullying Research Center actually found that someone who is a victim of cyberbullying is at a higher risk to suffer from low self-esteem and thoughts of suicide. It has not been clarified whether the cyberbullying is the cause of this, or if these qualities make someone more susceptible to being cyberbullied. But, either way, having depression, low self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts is very detrimental to a teenager’s health. If cyberbullies were prosecuted for their horrendous actions, it would possibly decrease the chances of people cyberbullying others because they do not want to deal with the consequences.
