No Country for Old Men depicts the journeys of three men: Sheriff Bell, Moss, and Chigurh, who all cross paths with one another due to a drug deal that went bad in the Texas desert. As a result of this drug deal, each man is presented with new challenges to overcome each day, which expose the true colors of each character’s personality by seeing how they deal with the problem at hand. And in the case of Chigurh, he solves his problems through unpleasant acts of violence, but always escapes because of his intelligence, relentlessness, and determination. Throughout the book, Chigurh shows his intellectual abilities through escaping the authorities, and killing people that are running away from him. He shows his determination when he is pursuing Moss for the bag of money Moss stole in the desert. And not even the injuries he endured in his pursuit to catch Moss deterred him from the path he set originally. And once Chigurh caught wind that Moss had an assassin to kill him, Chigurh became eager to find not only Moss but now Wells too. But as he was on his way to kill Wells and Moss he suffered bullet wound in his leg that delayed him a couple of day, but never diminished his drive. Once he killed Wells, Chigurh “fished for the phone in his pocket” that was ringing and soon found out that Moss was on the other side, and was so determined to get that money back that Chigurh threatened to take the life of Moss’s wife, Carla Jean (179). Not only is he determined to kill people, but he is also determined to escape the police and never get caught again. Even when a bone is “sticking up under the skin” after a car crash and needs medical attention, Chigurh will not stick around for the police to call an ambulance since he know that if he does he will go back to prison (260).
