Reflection is an active process whereby we gain an understanding of how our professional experiences have contributed to our professional development. As a pragmatic learner, I understand the value of reflection as I consider previous experiences to determine the best course of action. From my earlier clinical placements and from feedback on my assessment forms I have identified some areas where my attitude and professional outlooks have matured and changed. My confidence, competence, knowledge, ability to work in a team, my interpersonal skills and attitudes towards patients and their families have developed. Over my four years of clinical placement I have been given greater responsibilities from the radiation therapists leading to more positive experiences.
While on placement in Cork University Hospital in 2nd year, I found that I had difficulties communicating with the patients because of our different accents. I was not confident, therefore when giving appropriate side effect management advice or supporting the patients. My low level of self-confidence arose because of the lack of effective communication and my limited skill level at the time. To develop and improve my confidence and communication skills I became proactive and requested assistance from my clinical assessors. I, also, incorporated all feedback from my assessment forms into my learning objectives. Through reflection, practice, repetition and use of a mentor, I have significantly improved my skills and competency and have shown a willingness to participate in the clinical environment. ...tions, reflecting on events and challenging accepted approaches is a great way to learn, progress and develop oneself professionally and personally. Day-to-day events create opportunities where we can reflect, review and clarify what we have learned and extend our skill set as we advance while experiencing a broad range of similar clinical events.
Through reflection and critical analysis I have been able to identify my strengths and weakness during clinical placements over the years. It has allowed me to begin a process of self-learning that will assist me in my professional and personal development. From my research project and this reflective assignment I have recognised the importance and value of this lifelong learning tool in health care practice as it will help provide a high quality of care and improve professionals’ confidence, decision making and actions.
