Ralph Nader has accomplished many tasks other than being 6’3” and making it to the age 83 and still going. He was and still is an environmental activist, consumer advocate, and a politician. He also is an anti-war activist. He also ran for president many times. But, I would like to focus on Nader’s work on being a consumer advocate. One of the most arguably biggest accomplishment Nader did for consumers was automobile safety. It started when Nader wrote a college article “American Cars: Designed for Death.” He stated that some fatalities from car crashes are not because of the driver but from poor vehicle design. This report got him a job of being a consultant at the Labor Department in which he helped with federal regulation in highway safety.
...on helped pass the Agricultural Labor Relations Act in California, the only law in the nation that protects the rights of farm laborers to unionize. But more than anything, I believe, his contribution to society has been his legacy of service to others and the commitment to social justice for communities fighting against inequalities.
The most important owner that was mentioned was the company called General Motors. They took a specific offense to the mention of one of their prized products. This excerpt that talks of the product completely belittled the positives, and showed the negative aspects. General Motors became infuriated by this book, because of how it made the company appear to its customers. After Nader book had been released for a while, he started experiencing some strange things that were out of the ordinary. Some of the things include: being followed and heavily monitored, threatening phone calls during the night, his friends being
This man was born in Miami, Florida in 1971 and son of Cuban immigrants. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Miami. That man is Marco Rubio. To me Marco Rubio isn’t just a politician, he’s an inspiration to many Hispanic immigrants who want to be successful in the United States.
What do you get when you mix a talented physician with an insightful American Senator? Rand Paul, a board-certified ophthalmologist who is also the United States House Senator from Kentucky. Paul’s vision of returning values of liberty along with a more limited government is what will make him a brilliant president elect in the approaching 2016 presidential election. Rand Paul is the most competent man to receive the Republican nomination because he continually displays concern about important issues regarding our magnificent country, his background demonstrates his intelligence and ample experience, and he plays an important role in American society.
John W. Gardner born 1912, had a varied and productive career as an educator, public official, and political reformer. Gardner's belief in society's potential was his guiding force, but he was wary of the dangers of complacency and inaction. Perhaps best known as the founder of the lobby Common Cause, he was the author of several best-selling books on the themes of achieving personal and societal excellence.
The process being all too eagerly supported by all except the only Senator to vote against the Patriot Act, Senator Feingold. The almost unanimous support of the Senate gave affirmation to the the American people who were nationally united to face the threat of terrorism. An overwhelming majority voiced support for the legislation Congress drafted and decreed would solve the threat of terrorism at its roots. There was also overwhelming support for both President Bush and the compromise of cherished rights such as protection from unwarranted search and seizure. In the political climate after September 11, the Patriot Act was passed from the House of Representatives and the Senate with an almost unanimous result of 96-1. Senator Feingold was the only Senator to fight against the Patriot Act before it was signed into law. The astounding speed of the enactment is best expressed by Peter Justice, “. . . the climate of fear in the weeks after the September 11 attacks and the haste with which the Patriot Act was passed allowed some of its more controversial
“The end of life is not to be happy, nor to achieve pleasure and avoid pain, but to do the will of God, come what may.”(Raushenbush)
Martin Luther King was one of the greatest civil right activists in American history. Martin Luther King impacted American society in many ways and one of the most important things he did for America was weakening racism in America. At the time when he was living, colored people living America were treated differently with white people. For example colored people needed a pass to go through certain places, they could not go to the same school as white people and it was much harder for colored people to get a job compare to white people. Martin Luther king thought these were wrong. He also thought these were against American dream. For him American dream meant every people having equal rights, opportunity and freedom. What was happening in America were completely against these. To fix this problem, Martin Luther King moved around the country and did nonviolent protest and organized a peaceful marching which attracted national attention showing brutality of police that were trying to stop the march. Martin Luther King also delivered a lot of speeches that inspired many people all over the world and one of his speeches include “I have a Dream.” One of the most famous speeches in America. In this speech he clearly explain his own opinion of how he think everyone should be treated
Bernie Sanders is the former senator of the state of Vermont and is currently running to be the democratic representative in the 2016 Presidential Election. Bernie Sanders has stated that he is a socialist democrat but it is unclear whether he is either a socialist or a liberal. His statement is unclear because on some topics he takes on more liberal view than a socialist view. Bernie Sanders is known for being a strong believer of the government helping out the economy more and having the wealthy pay more taxes. He wants less poverty in society and help it have a consistent middle class. Two issues that I agree with Bernie on is his views on helping the economy and his views on the war on terror. Bernie Sanders is a strong supporter
Martin Luther King, Jr., overcame struggles during his time which were, racism, discrimination and segregation. He was not always named Martin and neither was his father. Around the first time Martin, Jr., got baptized him and his father changed their names from Michael to Martin. King was born on January 15, 1929. He died on April 4, 1968. Martin graduated with a bachelor's degree in divinity studies. He then enters Boston University. Not to long after that did he marry Corrette Scott in Marion, Alabama, on June 18, 1953. He had three kids by the names of Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther King the third, Bernice Albertina and Dexter Scott. All during this time colored people are being discriminated against and Martin wants to put a stop to it. Because of his acts to stop racism his birthday was made a national holiday on November 2, 1983.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When most Americans hear that name the first thing that comes to mind is his “Dream”. But that is not all he was. His life was more than a fight against segregation, it was segregation. He lived it and overcame it to not only better himself but to prove it could be done and to better his fellow man.
Our president, Barack Hussein Obama has failed the American People. His antics in Washington have led the American People in danger, having American Citizens fighting with the enemy and has put America into a debt of now $19 trillion. On November 4, 2016, a new leader will be elected to the White House. A new leader will protect the citizens of the United States of America. A new leader will put America on the right track. And that person is Senator Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz born in Canada ran as a Senator from Texas and was elected in 2013. Senator Ted Cruz should be the next president of the United States, resulting in a government where they’re involved with national security and how to protect the American people rather than the government controlling
One of the first things we have learned about politics this semester is that there is a constant struggle over the true definition, especially in how broad or narrow the definition is. When Thomas Jefferson wrote that “Politics are such torment that I would advise everyone I love not to mix with them.” it is understood that he is referring to the electoral and governmental aspects of politics. If Dr. Michael Rivage-Seul and Leslie Cagan were to read this quote, they would argue that Jefferson has an extremely narrow view of politics and that if one were to desire a more accurate definition, they would have to look further than the restrictive culturally accepted definition. Martin Luther King, Jr. would also disagree with this definition but he I think he would have a bigger problem with the advice that Jefferson is giving. All three of the authors that we have looked at would, in one way or another, be forced to disagree with Jefferson based on the principles that they try to uphold and emphasize in their writings and speeches.
Martin Luther King saw how bad black people were treated, and during the 1950s he became involved in the Civil Rights movement. He was also the president of the boycott in (Rosmanitz, N.D.) 1955. In (Rosmanitz, N.D.) 1963 Martin Luther King gathered hundreds of thousands of Americans, black and white designed a march protest for equal rights in Washington D.C. The Lincoln Memorial is where Martin Luther king also gave his speech “I have a dream”. He is best known for his role in the of civil rights act using nonviolent in the civil rights act based on his Christian beliefs.
Ralph Nader, an American political activist and author of Lebanese origin, once said “When strangers start acting like neighbors... communities are reinvigorated.” Thus is the opinion of a Utilitarian, one who believes that one should act according to whatever yields the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. According to a Utilitarian, this quote describes the essence of our obligations to strangers, or people we don’t naturally care about. It says that we must treat strangers in the same way we would treat a neighbor, family member, friend, or anybody else we care about. By treating strangers this way, it promotes and creates a universal caring for the needy and can cause communities to be rejuvenated. For this
