On a daily basics we encounter throughout our day many isms, but I believe we encounter racism, sexism and ageism, are more and more common today. Even though we seem to want to believe that because it is 2017 that these things should not be happening but the sad truth is that we encounter it every day. Racism, sexism, ageism can be led back to slavery days, because well think about it. Racism is because of color, sexism deals with gender, and ageism is well age. So when you look back on history, whites owned the blacks, they mistreated and belittled them in every way humanly and inhumanly possible, that’s the racism. Racism has been around for decades and it seems to only get worst with time. Over the years racism has become more of a problem then it was back in the day. The only difference is that today we have laws that help put a handle on the issue. But in reality is there really anything being handled. True enough we cannot control how people think and feel about one another, but the question that still remain is. Have the laws against racism really put to order? That questions stands because when you look at what all is going on today, as people of color we ask ourselves are we truly free, and are we truly safe? In a way yes but then again no. Racism is defined as by Merriam-Webster “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race”, in other words one race strongly believing they are better or superior to anyone else. When we look at what has been happening over the past years, racism isn’t the same racism it was back then, it has gone further. Hostile sexism is basically physical or verbal harassment. Benevolent sexism according to stem women website, though not recognized as sexism, benevolent sexism is when we as women are to deal with sexual harassment or sexual advances on our physical appearance. Or when men decide that we cannot handle for example “fixing a car” or “carrying a propane tank”. And lastly of sexism is “accidental” or “unintentional”, to put it in simple terms it’s when one says they are for equality of genders but in reality they do everything to undermine gender equality. Such as in the work place when a man says or does something out the way but then make it seem as the women is being dramatic, or they play it off as if they would do or say the same thing to a man. Better example is sports, how male coaches pat their players on the butt, but a woman may take offence to it, and the mam will argue that he does it to everyone and she shouldn’t feel offended. We deal with this every day, but this isn’t just for women men go thought the something. And finally we have ageism which you can compare with sexism and
