Racism is a huge social problem in the world today. Many races today are being discriminated for being a certain race. Racism has been a social problem for a quite long time now, and it is still a social problem. The vast majority are being discriminated because of a certain group of a race, or person, done something that was awful, but this does not mean the whole race is to blame for the actions of others. Other races are looked down upon because of the color of their skin or maybe because they look very different. Racism has led up to genocide because one group fears another, or because of the way a race looks. A person who is racist is not born racist, they are taught to be racist or they see other people being racist, and they want to …show more content…

“If society exists through relationships with one another, then it is guided by the rules of conduct that apply to those relationships” (Pearson 18). The authors explains about the expectations of college students in a classroom. There were three students who would not stop talking during the lecture. The rest of the students encouraged them to stop talking. The professor did not have to tell the students to quiet down. Instead, the other students told them for the professor. Racism can also be like this situation. For an example, Adolf Hitler is the professor, the quiet students is Germany, and the talkative students is the Jewish community. Hitler does not need to kill the Jewish community, instead, his country does the killing for him. To solve racism with social norms, a larger group who is not racist can tell and teach a smaller group how not to be. “Social forces create the 'feeling ' or 'decision ' to change your behavior in someway and to be very careful to check on the formality of future gatherings to which you are invited” (Pearson 43). The authors explain how when a person was invited to a faculty barbecue. The person attended the barbecue in casual clothing T-shirt, shorts, and sandals, but the rest of the faculty was dressed in formal clothing. The person felt a sense of embarrassment. A person can be very courteous to a different person of another race. A group can then make fun of the person for treating them equally to their race. Then the person who treated the other race with respect, will then discriminate the race because the person felt a sense of embarrassment from their own race, and want to be accepted by their race. To solve racism with social forces is to respect all races because no is superior or better than another race. The proximity principle may also cause racism. The proximity principle is defined as how people are affected by social structure through their immediate social environments. “The proximity principle states that we often feel the effects of society through interpersonal interaction and communication with people around us” (House 1992).
