The purpose of this reaction paper is to examine the thoughts and feelings of the readings for the purpose of the interjection of opinion. Chapter eight in the text book discusses the history of the progression of the field of social work as a profession from emergence through expansion. When I first glanced at the title I honestly thought that the chapter was going to consist of a long history dating back to primeval time, since Social Work is a very old ideology. However, the profession is a fairly new concept(professionally) although it is centuries old. The text gives a brief but respectable understanding of the history throughout the ages. The emergence of Social Work came about due to the overwhelming necessity of human need. The need of humans in a social environment includes everything from food to lodging accommodations. This has been reason since civilization, humans having their basic needs met, referring to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, needs are one of the most essential entities. The founding individuals of Social Work recognized the needs of humans and without option set out to make changes in their environment. Fortitude, pride and strengthening of communities through service. Courage, heroism, and involvement are characteristics that exude from the Social Work profession. Leadership skills that change minds, and body. To share in a profession of individuals that share the same vision will result in a wonderful exchange of ideas, interpersonal growth and development. The rich history of Social Workers has inspired me to aim higher, reach further, and remain steadfast in what I believe.
