Are you willing to give up the control of your own vehicle to possibly decrease or maybe even stop traffic related deaths and injuries? Over the years, that number continues to grow; now finally we’re doing something about it. Google have designed one of the few autonomous vehicles that exist today and they are currently testing them on public roads in busy cities. Some scientists believe that autonomous vehicles might lower or possibly even stop traffic related deaths and injuries. Since last year, according to Amanda Hoover, “Traffic related deaths have increased by 10.4 percent” (Hoover. Para. 5). Autonomous vehicles are a very clever idea. For example, Amanda claims that “Autonomous vehicles don’t have problems focusing on what’s in front of them and they are programmed to follow the law” (Hoover Para. 10). If all vehicles on the roads were self-driving, traffic related deaths and injuries would drop dramatically. Unlike humans, autonomous vehicles permanently follow the law. They don’t speed because they are in a rush, or skip red traffic lights. Additionally, she also said, “Some have said that [by] replacing human-driven cars with a fleet of autonomous vehicles [this] could eradicate all traffic incidents.” (Hoover. Para. 14). If all human-driving cars where replaced with these intelligent vehicles the roads would be much safer because all the vehicles would follow the rules. These vehicles don’t quickly get impatient, irritated, tired or distracted. For instance, Lane Filler explained that, “Even if drivers paid strict attention behind the wheel, they wouldn’t drive as well as an autonomous vehicle” (Filler Para. 5). If a driver tried to pay attention behind the wheel he still wouldn’t drive nearly as well as an autonomous vehicle because self-driving cars are have 360 degrees of vision. Self-driving cars have multiple sensors that let them see all the cars around the body of the vehicle. Often Human drivers quickly get distracted when behind the wheel because they can’t concentrate on multiple moving objects. Computers don’t get distracted, they are programmed to identify hazards and other objects. Furthermore, Filler also claims, “[Human] drivers wouldn’t drive as well as self-driving vehicles because their concentration and response times are worse.” (Filler Para. 2). If human drivers were to try and fully focus on the roads and what’s happening in front of them, they still wouldn’t drive as well as self-driving cars because they can’t concentrate for extended periods of time and they can’t react as fast as a computer. In summary, these vehicles are more aware of moving objects and other cars than most humans, which allows them to avoid speeding drivers and other dangerous
