Education is such an arbitrary concept. We are expected to go to school, learn, as well as maintain our sanity but, what happens when a child cannot grasp a concept? What is expected of a child who was once so full of knowledge, but is now filled with dread because their previous school has failed them? I’m describing the plight that I have endured throughout my years of high school. It wouldn’t be much of an essay if I didn’t explain where I’m coming from. Since the third grade, I had earned straight A’s up until my freshman year of high school. School was relatively easy for me. I was striving way above my peers in terms of reading and math. For a country that promises such great freedom, we fail to give students the freedom to flourish in schools. The system was built so that certain people would have to work harder to succeed. We are not given equal opportunities to excel. Schools should allow children to learn the way they are most capable of doing so. I believe that schools should test students for their learning style and pair them in classes with peers of that similar learning style. Therefore a child who cannot learn from ordinary, pedantic teaching can efficiently grasp any subject heading their way. Schools should also allow students to choose the subjects that peak their interest. The useless knowledge of calculus in a person who desires to study journalism is a waste of time. Schools should teach the basics but, ultimately let the student choose their desired subjects. Now you may claim that this what college is for but, first and secondary education is the building blocks for establishing work ethic and studying skills. Some schools neglect to think about the kids who is not sure of how they effectively learn, the kids who struggle with understanding new concepts, the kids who try their hardest to study but ultimately fail to grasp new information. I am one of those kids. I have began to understand how I effectively learn due to help from my teachers but, what about the kids who do not have that support system. Why allow them to continue to
