The second one is differentiation between races and classes. Some charter schools’ mission is serve minorities, such as African-American and Hispanic, because they want to save the nations’ culture. However, this limit of communication with other communities will result in a big gap objectively. Charter Schools are best known for combining traits and features of both public and private schools. Charters schools are not restricted to many of the rules and policies put on other public schools (Gale 1). For example teachers are given more free reign in charters, and they are not expected to stick to a certain curriculum. Because there is no specific criteria in place for teachers of charter schools, pay scales do not have to be followed for teachers and administrators. Also, charters are publically funded and have specialized accountability for producing certain results.

Being raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I went to school to understand the idea of analyzing and understanding concepts. I believe schools are a reflection of their communities. Our schools are no longer segregated due the US Supreme court decision handed down in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. However, a schools makeup is similar to the communities they serve. A majority white school belongs in a majority white community. A diverse community such in large cities like New York will have diverse student body in their schools. Schools in the United States have been desegregated for over a half-century or have they. A film called “Little Rock Central- 50 Years Later” says differently. Little Rock Central is the famous high school where the Little Rock Nine students went to school. The school was forced by the federal government to desegregate. This film now captures this same high school fifty years later and finds a new type of segregation. The new type of segregation is now about social economic class and academic class.

Compulsory education laws define America’s adolescent people today. Without these laws many people wouldn’t get the education they need in life or for their future. Compulsory education helps people develop or expand many skills that they will need in life, such as social and thinking skills. By abolishing compulsory education laws in the United States people wouldn’t develop such skills or be prepared for life ahead of them. The problem is that there are not enough high quality schools in all areas especially the ones that have low income families. The NCLB did get more kids in school, but it does not mean that they actually received a quality education or even graduated for that matter. Although, there are great teachers working at public schools; there are also too many bad ones. They are the kind of teachers who do not actually care if their students learn the material they are teaching, and are only really there for the paycheck. As for the NCLB act it was more of a never ending failing cycle. First off the act states that people are able to choose what school they want to go to when that clearly is not the case because each city has district lines. Then the act claims that all schools have to do is apply for grants and ask for money from the government or they can get money based off of the schools’ test scores. When these schools in bad neighborhoods have no money to implement programs to help students do better in school, and in turn they cannot get any money because they are not meeting the state’s standards. That is how this act becomes a failing cycle, and is only able to actually work for the nice public schools because they are the ones meeting the state’s standards which meaning they are more likely to receive any money or grants from the government. How to change the public higher education system has been a major topic of discussion but there has still been no major action taken. We struggle to figure out how much funding is needed for higher education and where it should come from. Our people continue to suffer from an underfunded high cost system. Proper school funding is one of the keys to having a successful school. Americans believe that funding is the biggest problem in public schools. School improvements revolve around funding. There needs to be funding not only in the successful schools but also the schools that aren’t doing as well. In documentary, Waiting for Superman, it talks about how smaller class sizes will help students. Funding is what will help the smaller class sizes. State funding mechanisms are subject to intense political and economic scrutiny (Leonard). Studies have shown that funding is inversely related to accreditation levels (Leonard). School funding needs to be increased, but there must be accountability as well.
