Imagine that one day, your family takes you for a ride in the car. Everything is normal, but you notice that the atmosphere is different. You pull up to an unfamiliar building. They lead you to a door, where they hand you to a new, scary person. Where is your family going? Why are they leaving you here? Did you do something wrong? This is the mind of a scared animal being given to a shelter. Shelters around the world, will intake a total of 8-12 million animals combined. That scared animal will be taken in, given care and love, so that it can be adopted into a new, loving family. Thousands of those strays will be euthanized by pounds because there is no room for them, or they just don’t have the patience to work with them. In a shelter, strays are able to have the care they need, and will be up for adoption to go to a forever home. Shelters are able to find homes for all animals, of all breeds. Take, for example, pit bulls. Pit bulls account for more than 20% of dogs available for adoption. Pit bulls have a “bad rap” because they can be aggressive. But, all breeds can be aggressive under certain circumstances. Just like all other breeds, a pit bull can be one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. Once a potential owner understands this, a pit bull is a great adoptable pet. Occasionally, a feral pet will enter the shelter. These pets can be qualified as special needs, because they are very fearful of people. A feral animal, depending on the age, needs a lot of work. If it is young, it won’t take as long to come around as an older animal, which may or may not ever be able to properly socialize. Shelter volunteers work for hours with these animals, making sure that they will be okay to adopt, and will live a healthy life, not being in fear of people. These volunteers are a vital part of any
