Recommended: Human trafficking and policing in the United States

Are we doing enough to put an end to human trafficking? Millions of people worldwide at this moment are victims of human trafficking that have been bought or sold, and have been forced into things like prostitution and forced labor. Anybody, at anyplace, and anytime can fall victim to human trafficking, there are so many people around the world who have become victims of trafficking and can’t regain their freedom by themselves. So many human trafficking victims are needing help, we need more people and authorities to help put in effort to end this crime. People worldwide are falling victim to human trafficking. They need all of us to do what we can to help them get their freedom. “But she says for many of the young girls out on the streets - confused, terrified and trapped in those relationships - getting out can be a matter of life and death.” (Human Trafficking: The Lives Bought and Sold, Notes Form C) All of the people who have lost their freedom would do anything to get it back but it’s not always so easy for them. It can be very difficult for them to escape without risking losing their lives. “The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that 73 percent of all its child trafficking reports stem directly from Backpage.com, a site that enables the explicit advertising of human bodies for sale.” (The Fight Against Sex Trafficking in the US by Helen Taylor, Notes Form B) People can now be human trafficked by being listed on a secret website. We never even realize when someone is being trafficked. If we can’t help them and they can’t get free on their own then they will be trapped forever. This is one of multiple reasons for why people should become more aware of trafficking so we can get the many victims out of their dangerous situations. “Jane’s abuse went on for nine years - sometimes every day, sometimes with months in between. Her ordeal was made worse, she says, because police and other agencies didn’t believe she was a victim. She finally escaped the clutches of the gangs by contacting the Salvation Army.” (Human Trafficking: The Lives Bought and Sold, Notes Form C) This was one example of when a young girl was able to get free of her situation. She contacted the authorities but they didn’t even believe her and did nothing to help her. The Government and the authorities play a big role in our country so if they were involved in stopping this then we would be able to make a lot more progress in freeing the victims and

Without an organized coalition to help prevent such atrocities, it is left up to national governments to come up with solutions for their respective nations, and many governments do not possess the know-how or effort needed to combat these crimes.

It is not the girls fault and if these traffickers are punished and made an example of, it could discourage others from following this dark path and this will mitigate and eventually end sex trafficking. Some countries don’t persecute the traffickers, or they do very little to punish them and this needs to change to eliminate sex trafficking. When some countries are “lagging behind with no counter-trafficking laws at all”(Jesionka), this prevents people who are held captive from getting the justice they deserve in some parts of the world. If the world worked together to eliminate this, the countries that are exploited for this trade would keep their people safer. The countries need to take on these traffickers if there is going to be any difference in this modern slavery.
