Trafficking is a form of modern slavery because people’s bodies are sold for the gain of others against their wills. The steps that must be taken to prevent sex trafficking involve raising political and social awareness, people working together and the prosecution of traffickers. Awareness of sex trafficking is very important because it can lead to the prevention of this modern slavery. Lack of awareness is a major reason for the existence of modern slavery because not many people know what to do about it. In the modern age, “one of the biggest impediments to anti-trafficking efforts is People need to work together just like they did to end slavery, when everyone sees this as wrong there is nothing that can stop the demise of sex trafficking. In many communities “[people] can turn on the TV now and see pimps glamorized in TV shows, music videos, and movies”(Frundt). In the communities, people see the aspects of sex trafficking as glamorous and they don’t realise that it is a type of slavery and the girls are miserable. If communities can work together to eliminate this issue, this modern slavery can be eliminated altogether because people won’t allow for it to continue in their communities. The way that sex trafficking is viewed directly affects how it exist because with communities working together to end it there will be no where for it to continue. Certain communities are accepting of this slavery and only care about protecting themselves. If communities like these can be changed, it will allow for them to mitigate the effects of sex trafficking and this will make it simpler for the officials to do their jobs. A major proponent for the end of sex trafficking believes that “trafficking starts in a community, and can be stopped by a community”(UN Chronicle). Communities influence the people in them and these communities are what allow sex trafficking to exist, but they are also what can end it. The UN Chronicle says that the only way to end sex trafficking and give these victims the closure they deserve is the “prosecution of traffickers and protection of victims”(UN Chronicles). It is not the girls fault and if these traffickers are punished and made an example of, it could discourage others from following this dark path and this will mitigate and eventually end sex trafficking. Some countries don’t persecute the traffickers, or they do very little to punish them and this needs to change to eliminate sex trafficking. When some countries are “lagging behind with no counter-trafficking laws at all”(Jesionka), this prevents people who are held captive from getting the justice they deserve in some parts of the world. If the world worked together to eliminate this, the countries that are exploited for this trade would keep their people safer. Human trafficking is said to be a form of modern-day slavery, subjecting its victims to commercial sex, debt bondage, and forced labor through force, fraud, or coercion. There are often no easily identifiable victims as they come in all ages, genders, and races. There are said to be at least 2.4 million victims of human trafficking across the globe at any given time, leading to profits of $32 billion for the criminal masterminds behind such trafficking operations, making it the second most lucrative criminal industry behind narcotics. Despite the abundance of victims, it is estimated that fewer than 30% of all countries report at least 10 trafficking convictions a year, and 20% of countries do not even have an offense for trafficking. An additional 20% of countries have an offense for trafficking but still report no convictions of the offense. Without an organized coalition to help prevent such atrocities, it is left up to national governments to come up with solutions for their respective nations, and many governments do not possess the know-how or effort needed to combat these crimes.

Throughout the world, traffickers coerce and abduct women and children into the sex trade. Traffickers then trade and sell these women for the use of sexual exploitation (Mace Venneberg, and Amell 336). As many as 20 million people are involved in the global sex trade at any given time (Nawyn, Birdal, and Glogower 56). Though sex trafficking is acknowledged as an issue throughout the world, it continues to become even more extreme. Anyone, from anywhere, could be taken and sold as a slave. In countries such as Cambodia and Thailand, girls can be as young as five or six years old when they enter the sex industry (Chung 484; Mam 62). Statistics show that 80 percent of sex slaves are women and 50 percent are children (Mace, Venneberg, and Amell 338). “It can be expected that at least 1 in 40 girls born in Cambodia will be sold into sex slavery” (Mam 1). This number is alarmingly high, and continues to rise. There are several human rights activist groups and global organizations that attempt to stop the trafficking; however, more effort can always be put forth to help women and children throughout the world. Global organizations should do more to help the women and children in the sex industry; no person should have to endure rape, torture, or humiliating servitude.

The issue of sex trafficking affects 2.5 million people at any given time (Abas et al., 2013). The form of sex slavery affects many women and children across the world. Even though both males and females are sexually trafficked and exploited, there is a deep emphasis on the sexual exploitation of women and children. This is due to gender discrimination (Miller, 2006). This is because women and children are more vulnerable and appeal to the larger populations of brothels and the so-called “clients” since the majority are men.
