Slavery is one of the issues that was, is and has been a major concern in the world. The nature of contemporary slavery is unknown, but estimates show that there are millions of victims of slavery across the globe. Slavery covers a wide variety of human rights violations such as sexual mutilation of men, women and children, child prostitution, sale of orphans, child pornography and many others. On the other hand, human trafficking is an area of concern that involves recruiting, transporting, buying or selling a person by means of force or fraud for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation or forced labor. Majority of human trafficking are worldwide which involves the transportation of victims from Africa, South and Eastern Asia, Central and South America, Russia and other developing countries to developed countries in Asia, the Middle East, North America and central and southeastern countries of the European continent. Human trafficking is modern slavery. Human trafficking is a serious problem but affects our home, Las Vegas the most. It’s such a problem, because people fail to recognize it, and don’t understand the severity of the crime. Human trafficking is where children, teens, and adults are prostituted for money. Some are forced to have sex. Human trafficking occurs all over the world, but its effect in Nevada is devastating. There have been 2,229 victims of human trafficking that have been saved since 1994.
The United States has always been known for sticking their nose in places where it does not belong. America has been part of wars that could have been avoided, scandals that had nothing to do with the United States. Millions of lives over the years could have been spared if America would have just simply stayed where they belong. What if though, America feels like they have to get involved in forging affairs if they think it can cause or is causing a problem on American soil or with Americans themselves? There are several different types of human trafficking and smuggling crimes that are in today’s society. The number one kind of human trafficking is sex trafficking. The handlers usually kidnap someone, ninety percent of the time a girl under the age of eighteen, and sell them to different people all over the world for sexual reasons. The girls they kidnap and sell can be from the area or can just passing through and get in the wrong place at the wrong time. Forced labor is the second most common type of human trafficking in the world. This is where a person is takes advantage of a worker and bends labor laws to make them work longer hours or harder more tiring jobs with very little pay. Victims of forced labor most of the time do not even know what is happening to them. Most of the people that get sucked into the forced labor trade are very vulnerable; the reasons for this being that most of them live in poverty and have very little education. As one of the most infamous crimes in the world, human trafficking misleads and turns women, men and children to fall victims from all corners of the world every day. It also leads to their exploitation. Although best known form of human trafficking is sexual exploitation, hundreds of thousands of victims are also trafficked for forced labor, forced labor as domestic servants, child begging, or the removal of organs. Basically, human trafficking means to displace individuals and force them to provide a service against their will.
Globally, about 20 to 30 million people are involved in the human trafficking system, and of those, 14,500 to 17,500 people are trafficked in the United States every year. Human trafficking is more prevalent today then ever before. It is the third largest crime internationally. People are abused and taken advantage of. According to the article, “11 Facts About Human Trafficking,” on average, a person is forced into the system around age 9, and the majority of victims are women and girls, with a small percentage of men and boys. In addition, the human trafficking system is a $32 billion dollar industry. Human trafficking can be defined as the selling and trade of human beings, ranging anywhere from children to adults, for the purpose of sexual slavery or involuntary labor, but Faith Alliance against Slavery and Trafficking (FAAST) is working to provide relief and hope for people involved in the system (“Child Trafficking”).
Not only is human sex trafficking slavery but it is big business. It is the fastest-growing business of organized crime and the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world (fbi.gov). While the U.S. Department of State estimates that 800,000 – 900,000 people are trafficked across borders annually, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and many other organizations taking the lead to eradicate trafficking put the number above 2 million (feminist.org). On average one in five victims of human trafficking are children. In third world countries the number is even higher. Children are more wanted especially in the work force because of their small hands for working on machinery and untangling lines and nets.

With the growing number of countries with child exploitation and young girls and women selling their bodies unwillingly, there becomes an issue when crossing country boarders and the laws that those countries have established. There are serious definitional and methodological differences within the worldwide studies. There is no sure way to measure and document the actual extend of sexual exploitation of children because research only can go so far, many children and women go unnoticed or fly under the radar. It starts with a brief description of what is human trafficking and how it works as a business. So many people think that it is just teens and adults that get stuck into the trafficking business, but it is also small children.
Throughout history the trafficking of humans and children has been widespread, not just in the past or in 3rd world countries, but around the world and to this day. Picture this: your family is extremely poor, all members share a room, and there's never enough food, add to that the possibility of an abusive family member and you’d be surprised how much worse life could be if sold into slavery. Working as a slave could mean long days with no breaks, verbal abuse, little food or time to eat, and harsh punishments if you can't keep up. This is the unfortunate reality for many, and that's only one possible form of exploitation.
