The lightning thief is the first book in the series. Percy Jackson was a twelve-year-old boy but not just any young boy; he was a demigod. In other words he’s half human and half god. In the beginning Percy didn’t know he was a demigod until an incident happen with his so called “algebra teacher”, Mrs.Dodds Percy turned her into dust with a pen,( a sword in disguise as a pen i should say) He told his best friend at the camp Grover right after it happened but he acting like he had know idea what Percy was talking about. Grover claimed that there was never a Mrs.Dodds. Percy also asked his favorite teacher Mr.Brunner; he also said there was never a Mrs.Dodds working at the school, Ever! After all that went down Percy started going …show more content…
The bus broke down, Percey started seeing things like theses 3 old ladies were just sitting in a rocking chair sewing a huge sock. Grover started acting weird towards Percy, he didn’t want to leave his side. Little did Percy know Grover was protecting him. The bus eventually got fix and took the to the big city. Grover want to walk Percy home but Percy bolted right after the bus stopped. When Percy finally got home his ome surprised him with a trip to a cabin in Montauk. While there there Grover just appeared at the cabin, Something after Percy. So his mom put both of them in the car and drove them to Camp Half-Blood. Camp half-blood are for people like Grover and Percy. Did i mention Grover is a satyr; half-man and half-donkey. There are many other characters in the story the story, but there are a couple special one. Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena. So you can imagine she was one smart cookie. Percy’s father is Poseidon, god of the sea. Athena and Poseidon didn’t really get along. Annabeth and Percy have something in common: both have family issues and terrible step-parents. Her dad is a human, a professor at West Point who teaches American History. Annabeth is anger at his for rejecting her at a young
“Suspense combines curiosity with fear and pulls them up a rising slope.” - Mason Cooley. These emotions that suspense creates are intended to keep viewers interested and entertained while watching, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, directed by, Chris Columbus. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” was filled with suspense. The three major elements the director used to generate suspense were conflict, sympathetic attachment to the protagonist and foreshadowing.
Percy’s relationship with other characters reveal a lot about who he is.The feelings with his mother is that there close. Percy feelings his dad is he thinks he’s a coward and Percy doesn't like his step father. Percy's feelings with his mom is that they are both close because in the text it says “But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop. This—along with keeping her maiden name, Jackson, rather than calling herself Mrs. Ugliano—was proof that she wasn't totally suckered by Gabe. She did have a rebellious streak, like me.” This shows they are close because he calls her mom and cares about
Percy Jackson lives a normal but hard life. The reader is able to determine that this is the ordinary world as Percy has not been told his true identity. Percy thinks he is an ordinary average teenage boy attending sixth grade at his sixth school, Yancy Academy which is a “private school for troubled kids in upstate New York.” Percy mentions that his life is quite confusing as well as he describes he has dyslexia and ADHD. These are the problems create a major issues as they affecting and make his academic achievement difficult. At birth Percy’s first father had left him and his mother. After his father left them his mother decided to get remarried. From Percy’s point of view this was not a smart choice as his step father treated her poorly. Percy is definitely unsatisfied and frustrated with her decision as he respects and cares about her a lot. Percy also greatly loves his mother as he defends her when she is disrespected by his stepfather. Percy seems to only have one real friend, Grover who is scrawny and “on top of all that, he is crippled”. He does not associate with other kids as he feels he does not belong with them. The reason he is in trouble at home and school could be that others don’t recognize and realize him as well as he does not understand his place. This is what the reader would classify as Percy’s ordinary world. From this point on, the story will further develop into the next stage call to adventure as the ordinary world seems to be a place the he despises.
He had multiple reasons for doing so: His family was threatened, some of his friends died at his enemy’s hand, and all the “gods”, including Percy’s father Poseidon, were faced with death. “The gods and Mount Olympus will still be destroyed, but it will be much messier. Much, much worse for you and your city. Either way, the Titans will rule" (Riordan 112). With the help of other demigods and Hades, the “god” of the underworld, Percy Jackson battled Kronos, a Titan. Even though Percy and his friends won, it came with a price. Rick Riordan, the author, writes “she [Selena] didn’t breathe again” (Riordan 155) and “The son of Nemesis fell through a fissure that went straight through the heart of the mountain—straight into open air” (Riordan 172). Percy Jackson stopped the Titans from completing their mission, therefore completing his: “We saved the world” (Riordan 196). Afterward, Percy was “heading back to Goode High for my sophomore year” (Riordan
Percy Jackson is a true hero. Imagine if you had the chance to save your mother, but put your own life at risk. When Percy was given this chance, he never even thought about his own life. When he saved the world, he didn't care if he put his own life in immense trouble. When he met his half brother, he stood up for him, not caring if no one liked him after. It is clear that there is no way that Percy Jackson can be thought of anything but a hero, which is what he truly
Percy Jackson is the main character in this story, who is a demi god, who mortals are after. His name is short for Perseus and his father is one of the big three gods, Poseidon. He is suffering from dyslexia and ADHD, which could be deliberately added to the character by Riordan, to show he is meant to be a hero, and not to do well in school. This shows that school is not what he is good at, and he is destined to be a hero and save people. The character Grover, who plays Percy’s best friend, parallels a Satyr who is human from the waist up and goat from the waist down and is a companion of wine God, Dionysus, who we later learn, is the camp director for Half-Blood Camp.
I believe that Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is a modern day adaptation of Perseus. There are many reasons that I believe this and that is what I am going to explain to you in this essay. I also believe that Percy Jackson is a more current version of the Perseus story and more relatable as well. First of all, the events in both the movie and the reading are similar.
Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy who has dyslexia and ADHD. During a school trip to a museum, Percy defends his friend Grover from a bully by making the water in the fountain grab the bully. Percy’s teacher Mrs.Dodds then separate Percy from the rest of the class before she transforms into one of the creature from Greek mythology and attack him. Percy then uses pen which transforms into a sword and kill the creature. After school Percy’s mother Sally takes him and Grover to the beach house unfortunately they are attacked by a Minotaur while driving to the countryside and Sally disappears in a gold light when the monster grabs her. Enraged, Percy kills the Minotaur and passes out. Three days later, he wakes up in the infirmary
In 2005, author Rick Riordan published Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The story follows 12-year-old Percy Jackson as he discovers that he is a demigod and sets out on a quest to stop a war between Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. In order to stop this war, he must travel with Annabeth Chase (a daughter of Athena) and Grover Underwood (a satyr and Percy’s best friend) in order to find Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt. While the plot of the story may not seem relatable at first look, there are many instances where Percy resonates with me. When Percy’s character is first introduced, he is just a somewhat normal kid in a school.
Common themes can be found across various pieces of literature. In the myth Theseus, Theseus goes to King Minos to fight the Minotaur and get their freedom from this evil King. Theseus does this and returns back victorious. In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Percy is sent on a quest to receive the Lightning bolt and return it back to Zeus. These summaries show that Percy and Theseus had to struggle against authority in order to do what is right.
Percy Jackson is the main character of the book and is the narrator as well. He is twelve years (1) old with ADHD and dyslexia (7) and describes himself as a demigod, or half-blood (1), meaning half [Greek] god, half human. He eventually finds out that his father is Poseidon and that his mother is human, hence making him a demigod.
“Go on with what your heart tells you, or you will lose all”. This quote, spoken by Percy is a repetitive thought that he uses in his quest to persevere to the end. From movies, to stories, to plays, the hero undergoes a journey, that is universal in nearly all. This journey is referred to as the Hero’s Journey and consists of three stages with other elements within each stage, and was recognized by Joseph Campbell. The pattern of the journeys allows a universal audience that all, young and old, can relate to. A broad description of the monomyth includes the hero leaving their ordinary life, commencing the bulk of the journey, and returning home. In the movie The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, the protagonist Percy Jackson presents discernible
In the second installment of The Heroes of Olympus, The Son of Neptune is a thrilling adventure written by Rick Riordan. The book begins where The Lost Hero left off. Percy, also in Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, is wandering Southern California with no memory of where he came from or who he is except one name, Annabeth. Being chased by three gorgons, Percy stumbles upon, with the help of Hera/Juno, Camp Jupiter. In the Roman camp, Percy joins the 5th cohort, which are the misfits of the camp, and befriends Hazel the daughter of Pluto and Frank the son of Mars, who are the biggest misfits of all. Percy and his newfound friends are soon called on a quest. Their mission is to recover the missing standard of the entire legion. They board the Pax, a small rowboat which makes up the entire Roman navy, and embark on their journey.
This is the true start to Percy’s quest. He made a few friends in the camp and they agreed to go on this journey with him. Those accompanying him were his protector Grover and Athena’s daughter Annabeth. They also get some helpful tools fro...
The first novel of the series, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief , is where Percy’s Hero’s Journey begins, encompassing the first five stages. The Ordinary World, the first stage, is the introduction of the main hero. “The hero, uneasy, uncomfortable or unaware, is introduced sympathetically so the audience can identify with the situation or dilemma” (Campbell). Percy Jackson, a twelve year old diagnosed with both dyslexia and ADHD living in New York with his loving, over-worked mother and abusive stepfather, begins his story attending a boarding school for “troubled youth” and having a less than spectacular time being the new kid. Despite his good intentions of protecting his only friend Grover from a bully, Percy gets in trouble at school and is pulled aside by one of his teachers, whom is revealed to be the Fury Alecto, one of Hades’s servants in disguise. It is at this point in the story in which the second stage, The Call to Adventure, comes into play. Percy defeats the Fury with the help of a centaur named Chiron, t...
