In Pearl Tull’s old age, she starts to lose her sight until she is completely unable to see. Pearl may be the only one within Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant who has gone literally blind, but many of the characters are just as blind emotionally. Throughout Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, many characters are too absorbed in their own problems and self-pity to notice the problems of the people around them. Almost all of the characters don’t realize how much their actions may have affected someone else, or are oblivious to the fact they did anything at all. She is walking through life as there is nothing wrong with anything ever, life is one big funny moment as she tells Pearl, “Quote”. Jenny never seemed to really deal with the fact that her second husband Sam left, she started taking it out on Becky, her daughter. Which is a lot like how Pearl abused Jenny as a child after Beck left. Jenny only knew how to take out her anger the way Pearl showed her. After though, she started going to the extreme of being oblivious to pain and suffering so she doesn’t have to deal with the feeling of sadness again. For Jenny, its one extreme to the next, as before her family it was with her looks. She was hardly eating thanks to Pearl’s comments about her weight and appearance. Just like Pearl, Jenny is also blind to family issues, choosing to believe she has a perfect American family instead of seeing how many problems they have. She is even blind to Slevin’s separation issues with his mother, he’s stealing random things that remind him of his her. Pearl and Jenny are the most similar in the family, with the way they have chosen to live their lives, which is why Jenny may be the most damaged and oblivious out of the Tull

Grace Clement is a complex key character that is a controlling force in March and exhibits a symbol of idealistic freedom to Reverend March during the Civil War. Her complexity is revealed through her tumultous past, and her strong façade that allows her to be virtuous and graceful through hard times.

Burke skilfully undertakes this philosophy as a source of inspiration for ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’. It is not another crazy adventurous tale with a heroic storyline that seems unrealistic; the novel is about individual representation as Burke insightfully illustrates the long and slow journey of Tom Brennan, navigating through his road of self-discovery that eventually leads to his destination and achieves his “ticket out of the past” (Burke, pg 182). The catalyst of the novel is a traumatic car accident causing two instant deaths and one paralysis.
Pearl has spent her entire life knowing who her mother is and identifies her with and only with the letter on. “Pearl’s image, crowned, and girdled with flowers, but stamping its foot, wildly gesticulating, and in the midst of all, still pointing its small forefinger at Hester’s bosom!” (Hawthorne 173). In this scene, Hester takes the letter off when she is with Dimmesdale, and Pearl refuses to come near her until she puts the letter back on; she recognizes that the letter is a part of who her mother is. The identity of herself is also uncovered as a result of the letter. Pearl sees how the Puritan society treats her mother and refuses to act likewise. Not only does she stand up to those who judge Hester, but she also practices being kind instead. “Pearl was almost sure, [the bird] had been hit by a pebble and fluttered away with a broken wing. But then the elf-child sighed, and gave up her sport; because it grieved her to have done harm to a little being that was as wild as the sea-breeze, or as wild as Pearl herself” (Hawthorne 147). Pearl cares for the wellbeing of those around her, both human and animal. This has shaped who she is through her kindness and her intelligence; it becomes what her identity is and displays how she identifies her mother, verifying that she was impacted the most by the scarlet

The Glass Castle is a novel that follows the life of a dysfunctional family from the perspective of Jeannette Walls, the third child of the Walls family. Throughout the stories, the readers see all the hardships the children face, as their lunatic parents do what they think is right. After reading the book, it seems to agree the quote “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands” by Anne Frank.
Pearl is Hester’s daughter from her illegitimate relationship. In the beginning Pearl is just a sign of sin, Hester feels that she is the only thing that she has left. With the story continuing, we begin to see Pearl interact with her surroundings. She never shows any desire to be with the other people in town and shows an interest in the “A” on her mother’s chest immediately. As she continues to grow older, she also begins to become more curious, she seems to understand her mother’s situation and does not interact with others in the village. She begins poking and throwing things at the scarlet “A” on her mother’s chest. She begins to show her great understanding of the situation when interrogated by the reverend Wilson. When asked who her father is, she tells him she has no father, but was rather picked like a rose from a bush. As Pearl grows older she becomes naughtier. She seems to understand her mother’s pain when Pearl throws things at the scarlet letter, so she does it more. She points at it and constantly reminds Hester that it is in fact still there trying to burn its way into her soul. Hester begins to wonder if the village people were right when they said Pearl was a devil. However, when Hester would think this way, Pearl would do something really kind and nice, and make Hester feel alright again. In the beginning of the story, Pearl is a young infant who symbolizes the goodness of her mother’s sinful act of adultery. Although she is the outcome of her mother’s sin, Pearl does not let it define her. When Hester is first determined in the story she is put in front of everyone in the market-place for public shaming. The author states, “she bore in her arms a child, a baby of some three months old … acquainted only with the gray twilight of a dungeon” (Hawthorne 95). People always say never judged a person by their cover, yet some of us still do it without even trying sometimes. I have done this on multiple occasions without really trying to judge a person. I once had an experience where I was trying out for a new club team and I saw this girl who looked really mean and scary because of the expression on her face. I always thought if I ever talk to her she would be mean, but one practice we started to talk and she wasn’t at all the person I thought she ways. It turns out that she is a nice person who just takes soccer very seriously. This just shows that we can have a certain opinion on someone by their looks, but they may be completely opposite from the way they appear.There’s this book call “Freak the Mighty” which has a good way of showing the theme of not judging a person

According to Joseph Campbell’s hero cycle, a hero undergoes a series of tests designed to push the hero to his or her limits and develop themselves in preparation for the final battle. In the case of Tiffany Aching these tests help her to develop as the witch of the chalk. According to Mistress Weatherwax a witch’s duty is to “look to … the edges” (357); witches “guard the sum of things” (358). A witch is responsible for their land, and all the creatures on it. They defend the weak and “speak up for those who don’t have voices” (42). Tiffany is responsible for the chalk and all of the living creatures on it but she is not yet capable of undertaking such a large responsibility. Throughout the book, Freak the Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick creates a valuable lesson for three main characters; Freak, Max, and Loretta Lee, that one should not judge another person based on appearance; looks can be deceiving. The story about Jenny is heartfelt, and there is no one right answer to deal with the problem of protecting her sanity. Jenny has little to no choice to deal with the abusive situation that she is currently experiencing with her mother, Mandy. Little Jenny can take the route of denial. She can put in her mind that the abuse of her mother is real for the sake of sanity.
She has an emotional disorder that makes her choose the wrong people. She chooses to be with someone who doesn’t love her, and who will abuse her. She was abused as a child, and the audience can see that this created a downward spiral throughout her life. There are multiple times where she wishes to commit suicide, and allows herself to be brutalized by boyfriends. While there is no diagnosis I believe that she suffers from depression. While Forrest is choosing the right path, Jenny is choosing the wrong one.
