Being a volunteer to me is not a duty or an extracurricular it has been about learning and helping others. Helping others changes one’s life and expands one’s view of the world. In my life my experiences as a volunteer have shaped my values, actions, and goals. In retrospect, the moments that I cherish the most are the times when I was able to make an impact on others lives and see the outcome of my endeavors. Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at an intensive two-week program that invited minority students to the Loma Linda University Campus to learn about the vast majority of careers in health. However, once I stepped into the garden it was like walking into a different world. There were hundreds of different fruits and vegetables. This was the only the beginning of a life changing moment, after the community leader of the garden told the group that the garden all began with a women and her ill child that needed to eat healthy organic food to improve his state but the mom could not afford to buy organic groceries for her son. The garden’s main goal is to provide accessible healthy organic food to areas such as food desserts and to people that may not be able to afford organic produce from places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods Markets. Additionally, the garden is completely administered and operated by volunteers only. There were older women also volunteering and even small children.
